There’s a lot of chatter about Warner Bros. Discovery right now, with some people suggesting that the success or failure of James Gunn’s upcoming Superman film could significantly impact the company’s future.
There’s talk that Peter Safran, who shares the leadership role at DCU, might leave due to potential internal promotions within the company. It’s been suggested that Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy, current heads of Warner Bros. films, could be facing dismissal.
WB Films in trouble? Mickey 17 flops, DC future at stake
The report originates from Puck News, providing insights into the current status of Warner Bros. Media’s film division under De Luca and Abdy. This analysis follows the latest box office flop, Mickey 17, featuring Robert Pattinson and directed by the Academy Award-winning director, Bong Joon Ho, known for his work on Parasite.
As a fervent fan, I’ve been delving into an engaging piece that dissects the key figures in the executive realm, shedding light on potential accountability. Interestingly, it concludes by introducing James Gunn, Peter Safran, our beloved Superman, and the substantial impact of DC’s intellectual properties – a topic that truly piques my curiosity!
Safran to replace De Luca and Abdy? What it means for the DCU
As reported by Puck News, there’s buzz in Hollywood that David Zaslav may dismiss Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy and appoint Peter Safran (or another individual) as their replacement. Currently, Safran shares the DCU leadership with James Gunn. However, it’s important to note that Zaslav’s representative has denied these rumors regarding De Luca and Abdy.
There’s no indication of how the DC Universe (DCU) might change if Safran ascends to lead Warner Bros. films. This leaves us wondering about possible scenarios. Could James Gunn assume full control over the DCU? Or perhaps a new co-leader will be appointed instead? Given that Safran manages the business aspects and Gunn concentrates on creativity, it appears probable that another executive might collaborate with Gunn to manage the DCU.
According to recent reports, it appears that Zaslav is considering swapping out the current team with Peter Safran, who currently serves as co-chair and co-CEO (alongside James Gunn) at DC Studios. However, whispers also suggest that Zaslav might embark on a hunt for new management instead.

Can Superman save WBD?
The article’s insights on Superman are quite intriguing – especially when you take into account the rumors from my sources within DC about David Zaslav pushing for a reboot of the DC Universe led by James Gunn, using less costly talent. It seems that the initial plan under De Luca was to carry on with the significantly more expensive DCEU.
As a movie enthusiast, I found an intriguing point in a recent Puck News piece: De Luca tends to splurge generously, while Zaslav is all about saving pennies, particularly when it comes to marketing expenditures. This alignment seems evident with the ‘Superman’ project, as most promotional efforts have originated directly from Gunn himself – a clear sign of frugality on Zaslav’s part.
Contrary to recent reports suggesting a marketing consultant was hired for Superman, Puck provides no indication of such an event.
Currently, Gunn and Safran are working diligently on a personal project: Superman – a film set for release in July that holds immense significance for Warner Bros. Discovery. The success of this DC franchise production is crucial for Warner Bros., as failure to achieve it may lead the studio down a path similar to Fox, which was acquired by Disney in 2019.
Is Warner Bros. Discovery for sale?
It’s intriguing to note that the article mentions a potential path for Warner Bros. Discovery resembling Fox’s, as it appears Zaslav had plans to sell Warner Bros. Discovery since the merger with Discovery. There have been rumors suggesting Comcast (Universal) has shown interest in acquiring Warner Bros. Discovery for quite some time now.
It’s been mentioned that if Zaslav were to sell WBD, he intends to maintain ownership over Discovery. Previously, I proposed – supported by Variety – that these recent actions of Zaslav with WBD are aimed at enhancing the company’s appeal for a possible sale.

What Happens If Superman Fails?
Following a sale, events can take various turns, but it’s worth noting that both Zack Snyder and James Gunn began their careers at Universal. It’s possible that Matt Reeves is encountering budget disagreements with Zaslav regarding The Batman: Part II and the future of DC, which might account for some of the delays. However, this is merely conjecture on my part. There has also been chatter online suggesting that Reeves may be waiting to see how Gunn’s Superman performs before making his move.
A significant amount of importance lies in Gunn’s version of Superman, as the intellectual property value of DC contributes significantly to Warner Bros.’ stock value. This film represents a crucial trial for DC Studios, and if it fails, the consequences could be substantial – potentially impacting Gunn, Safran, DC Studios, and even the studio itself, according to Puck News.
According to a seasoned Warner veteran, a crucial factor affecting stock price is the perception that DC’s Intellectual Property (IP) holds significance. David has placed a substantial bet that they can demonstrate the worth of DC’s IP, starting with Superman as their debut film. The success or failure of this movie carries a significant weight on Safran and Gunn, who is directing. However, if the movie underperforms, it won’t be Mike and Pam who shoulder the blame, unless people choose to criticize the marketing department instead.
