‘Superman & Lois’ Star and Producers Confirm Season Finale Will Honor the ‘Arrowverse’ in a Proper Way

As a dedicated fan of the Arrowverse for over a decade, I can confidently say that its final chapter feels like the closing act of a beloved saga. The upcoming finale of Superman & Lois, starring Tyler Hoechlin, is bittersweet – a poignant culmination of years of captivating storytelling and a heartfelt farewell to an era that brought us Green Arrow, The Flash, and so many more iconic DC characters.

The Arrowverse served as a precursor to the DC Universe (Extended). It represented a harmonious television world that intertwined various series. “Arrow,” centered around Green Arrow, was the catalyst for this universe. Subsequently, numerous prominent superhero shows were produced, and the franchise gained immense popularity, with “Arrow” and “The Flash” being particularly well-received.

Twelve years down the line, the comic book world created by CW is nearing its conclusion. The final act in the Arrowverse, the highly-acclaimed “Superman & Lois” series featuring Tyler Hoechlin, is entering its last season. The double-episode debut of this season is scheduled for October 7, 2024. This season will consist of only 10 episodes, marking the end of the Arrowverse altogether.

The producers of the show, Todd Helbing and Brent Fletcher, along with star Tyler Hoechlin, recently had a chat with Entertainment Weekly. During this conversation, they discussed how the final season will influence the series itself as well as the entire Arrowverse. They understand that by bringing their series to an end, they may be wrapping up one of the most cherished television franchises in history.

Helbing initiated conversations about the influence of the last season and how ‘Superman & Lois’ Season 4 would connect with the broader Arrowverse framework.

There’s an immense amount of pressure that comes with creating a TV show. From crafting the script to producing it, the weight is constant. Add to that the fact that the show revolves around iconic characters like Superman and Lois Lane – that brings its own sense of responsibility. After working in the Arrowverse for ten years, I feel a strong desire to do right by these shows and worlds. However, if I don’t learn to distance myself from these feelings, it could become too much, making it difficult to even leave home due to overwhelming emotions.

Brent Fletcher stated that they felt a sense of duty towards the Arrowverse as a collective, but he emphasized that keeping “Superman & Lois” on the air was crucial for them. He stressed that wrapping up their series in an appropriate manner was more important to them than adhering to the franchise as a whole.

In our strategy, we decided to create the finest version of the show that we could. Regarding Easter eggs, it’s tempting to imagine a scenario where you can incorporate numerous characters from other works due to the freedom a comic book offers. However, practicalities like schedules, budgets, and availability of actors make this dream impractical. So, we recognized that we have to work with what we have, and I believe the best way to pay tribute to 10 years of hard work is to present a product that leaves the audience feeling content upon watching it.

Finally, Hoechlin also weighed in on the fact that the series is in its final season:

Over the course of quite a remarkable period – either four or eight years, depending on how you look at it – I’ve been part of something truly unique, but especially with regard to this specific show. However, it wouldn’t be entirely accurate to say that it felt like a farewell to everything else. In an odd manner of speaking, when we first embarked on this journey, it was evident that this project would be distinct from what we had been doing in the Arrowverse. Therefore, I could separate myself from that experience right from the start. As this chapter comes to a close, it’s more about wrapping up this unique four-year journey, as it stood alone in so many aspects.
