As a fan who has followed Alex Garfin‘s journey as Jordan Kent/Superboy in Superman & Lois, I can’t help but admire his maturity, insight, and humility. His thoughts on James Gunn’s new direction for the DC Universe are not only thought-provoking but also reveal a deep understanding of the industry’s dynamics.
Alex Garfin, the actor playing Jordan Kent (also known as Superboy) in Superman & Lois, has expressed his opinions about James Gunn’s fresh approach for the DC Universe. He also hinted at his potential interest in continuing as Superboy after completing four seasons, should an opportunity in Gunn’s new direction arise.
Garfin discussed the selection of David Corenswet as the latest Superman character, pondering if James Gunn’s version of Superman & Lois and his DC Universe could have shared space. He acknowledged the innovative path that Gunn is forging, highlighting its significant departure from traditional representations of DC superheroes in media, and commended Gunn’s skill as a filmmaker.
Alex Garfin expressed his opinion by saying: I believe the two (referring to the Marvel and DC universes) were distinct enough to coexist peacefully, as they appear quite dissimilar. I think James Gunn excels in what he does because he manages to create a feel that what we’re watching is slightly removed from reality, giving it an elevated quality, which sets his work apart from the gritty, realistic style often seen in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight films.
The shows were remarkable as they seemed incredibly lifelike with complex and intriguing characters. Superman & Lois appears to be influenced by the Nolan-style approach, where characters are grounded and feel more realistic. Meanwhile, James Gunn’s work tends to take a different route, which I find equally impressive.
It’s unclear what his intentions are regarding the Superman film since we’ve not had a proper conversation. In fact, I’ve never personally met him. Our interaction has been limited to brief exchanges on Instagram, so only time will tell how things unfold between us.
Garfin pointed out that DC’s current adjustments might be echoing wider trends in the contemporary television and movie world. Contemplating the numerous evolutions happening in Tinseltown, the star of ‘Superman & Lois’ expressed this insight:
Alex Garfin seems to indicate they’re experimenting with a fresh approach, but he admits his understanding is limited. He also acknowledges there are intricate systems at play. Notably, Warner Bros. has undergone a transformation as well. The whole entertainment industry appears to be in a phase of transition that might persist for some time, and it’s uncertain if we’ll find our way out of it any time soon.
It’s quite likely the bottom has been reached with that strike, but it may never be clear it was almost at its end. In a sense, there was an over-inflated bubble of sorts, where people assumed there was endless demand for these specialized shows. They continued to produce more and more content, only to find that there wasn’t enough viewer attention because our focus is shifting towards platforms like TikTok and Instagram now.
Perhaps James Gunn, returning to Superman & Lois, simply aims to guide the project effectively considering the current state of change. After all, it’s ultimately a professional call he’s making.
As a die-hard fan, I’d be pondering over the possibility of joining a fresh franchise, should the opportunity arise. Reflecting on my exhilarating experience playing Jordan Kent in Superman & Lois, I can’t help but contemplate the diverse roles I aspire to delve into next.
Alex Garfin: If I received that call, the discussion might take a different turn. In practice, compared to theory, the roles I’m most drawn to are ones that align more with my current self. However, I had the chance to portray a remarkably subdued and complex character, which was wonderful, and I’m incredibly thankful for it. Yet, I yearn for a role that is more outgoing, similar to my personality, so I can exhibit some versatility in my acting skills.
As a fellow enthusiast, let me share that I nearly touched the edges of a venture remarkably similar to it. Regrettably, things didn’t pan out as planned, but such is life. Currently, I’m striving for something that feels like it could have been penned by none other than James Gunn himself.
I know he’s a little bit more into making a comic book look like a comic book. He did that so brilliantly in his Suicide Squad, which is a rare time. I’ve seen a comic book movie. I know he did that with Guardians of the Galaxy. It has this fun to it.
If a call came in asking for something somewhat like what James Gunn does, I’d certainly consider it. However, there are many talented actors around, and I believe it’s important to provide opportunities for others too.
