Superman is a truly selfless hero. Even though he’s an alien, he inspires people to be their best selves by always prioritizing others. He consistently saves the day with grace and avoids seeking attention for his actions.
It’s been tough for Superman to get a truly great movie adaptation, but Wonder Woman and Shazam have both had more success. You can watch them face off all this weekend and throughout January on M-Net Movies 4 (channel 108)!
A Feminine Counterpoint
I’ve always loved Wonder Woman! She wasn’t just created as a ‘female Superman,’ but as something completely her own. It was such a smart idea to offer a different kind of hero – Diana Prince – with her incredible strength and that amazing Lasso of Truth. It really worked, and she quickly built a huge following. I was so thrilled when Patty Jenkins, who I admired from her work on Monster, directed the Wonder Woman movie, and Gal Gadot was absolutely perfect in the role. She truly brought the character to life!
The Spirit of Wish Fulfilment
Shazam was inspired by Superman, sharing a similar secret identity and heroic nature. While embodying the same goodness and selflessness as Superman, Shazam offers a more lighthearted and humorous take on the superhero concept. The movie taps into the classic wish-fulfillment fantasy – similar to the film Big – where a young boy experiences life as a powerful adult superhero.
A Curious Showdown
As a movie lover, I’m really intrigued by this pairing on M-Net Movies this January. It’s a fascinating face-off between two heroes who are, at their core, genuinely good and incredibly powerful. You instantly see echoes of Superman in both of them, but what’s cool is they each bring something totally unique to the table. These individual quirks really help them stand out and feel fresh – they’re not just copies, they’re forging their own paths, and it’s exciting to watch.

Wonder Woman
Diana’s sheltered upbringing on a remote island makes her uniquely naive when she enters a world torn apart by war. This fun, action-packed movie really shines because of the chemistry between Gal Gadot and Chris Pine. The large-scale action sequences highlight the difference between her hopeful outlook and the harsh realities of the world around her. Although the final battle feels a little rushed, Wonder Woman ultimately succeeds in defeating evil and winning over the audience.

Shazam!
This movie is a fun, lighthearted take on the superhero genre, embracing the spirit of classic comic books rather than aiming for a dark and gritty tone. The casting of Zachary Levi is brilliant – after winning fans in Chuck, he convincingly embodies the heroic qualities of Superman. He captures the wish-fulfillment fantasy of being a kid at heart, even as an adult. While the film is playful, it’s grounded by Mark Strong’s excellent portrayal of Dr. Sivana, a truly menacing and powerful villain for Shazam.
The Verdict
I love a good superhero movie, and both of these films definitely deliver on action and spectacle. But for me, what really makes Wonder Woman special is the fantastic chemistry between Patty Jenkins, Gal Gadot, and Chris Pine – they just clicked! It’s a genuinely captivating adaptation that showcases everything great about the genre. If you’re looking for some iconic superhero action, you can catch both films on M-Net Movies 4 (channel 108) this weekend, or stream them on DStv all January long!
