Superman Ending Explained: Does David Corenswet Stop Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor? All About How He Sets Up Supergirl’s DCU Future

In the final act of the new Superman movie under James Gunn’s DCU Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, there’s no shortage of action. The story concludes with Superman confronting Lex Luthor‘s most ambitious scheme yet – a perilous alternate reality. Additionally, he faces off against a formidable foe called Ultraman, who is a powerful clone.

Following his getaway from Lex’s detention center, Clark Kent journeys back to his hometown of Kansas for some respite. However, upon hearing reports of an attack in Jarhanpur, Mister Terrific alerts him that Metropolis could also be under threat. As a result, Clark makes his way back to the city, only to discover that an interdimensional breach is causing devastation due to Lex’s pocket universe technology tearing apart Metropolis.

Superman vs. Ultraman

In simpler terms, Lex Luthor utilizes the rift to keep Superman occupied. Additionally, he dispatches The Engineer with advanced nanotechnology intended to subdue Superman, but Clark manages to resist it. Lex’s masterstroke is unveiling Ultraman – a clone of Superman created from one of Clark’s hairs.

In this scenario, Superman engages in a tough battle against Ultraman, finding it challenging until he summons Krypto for reinforcements. With their combined strength, they push Ultraman towards a dark abyss – a black hole. Afterwards, Clark Kent and Krypto manage to thwart Lex Luthor’s alternative strategies.

Here’s how Lex’s scheme unfolded

Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen, and Eve Tesmacher uncover Lex’s illegal arms trade with Boravia. By offering weapons at low prices, Lex aimed to conquer more than half of Jarhanpur. When confronted, Lex confesses that this was merely a pretext to eliminate Superman permanently.

In the meantime, the Justice Squad, along with Metamorpho, manage to rescue Jarhanpur from an invasion by Boravia’s military forces. Hawkgirl ends up slaying the leader of Boravia, ensuring lasting peace for Jarhanpur.

Later, Clark makes his way to Lex’s airborne office with the intention of preventing his departure. He conveys to Lex, “I’m just a man,” a fact that Lex had never fully grasped. Mister Terrific intervenes and seals the rift, thus preserving Metropolis. Prior to being incarcerated at Belle Reve, Krypto assaults Lex. Lois and Clark exchange a kiss, with her reciprocating his affections for the first time. Superman extends an invitation to Lois for a private interview.

Supergirl joins the DCU future

Towards the finale, Supergirl alights at the Fortress of Solitude to retrieve Krypto, her beloved canine companion. She expresses gratitude towards Clark for taking care of him and suggests further escapades. In an additional scene post-credits, Superman enjoys some quality time with Krypto while Mister Terrific mends a damaged structure.

According to James Gunn, what he’s been developing relates, in some sense, to a sequel. Although there hasn’t been an official announcement for Superman 2, fans can look forward to the return of both Clark Kent and Supergirl in the near future.
