On a Friday, Superman made his debut on various digital platforms, prompting eager fans to express their opinions on what was once known as Twitter.
The response has been divided, much like a theatrical premiere – with some hailing it as the Superman film they’ve long anticipated, while others took the opportunity to intensify their criticisms.

Positive Reactions: “The Hero We’ve Been Waiting For”
We asked Grok to summarize the reactions on X to the Superman 2025 digital release since Friday.
As per Grok’s findings, around 40% of the examined posts had a positive slant. Fans were thrilled about the opportunity to view it again from home, appreciating the movie’s comical aesthetic, vibrant imagery, and moving narrative.
Highlights:
- David Corenswet’s Superman and Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor drew strong praise.
- Krypto stole the spotlight for many viewers.
- Some users said the film felt like the Superman we needed right now and bought it digitally to watch multiple times.
The early release made the movie more convenient for these enthusiasts, allowing them additional opportunities to post edited versions and clips on the internet.
In 2025, Superman’s return was nothing short of what everyone raved about. For me, it felt like a much-needed burst of optimism in these challenging times – a beacon of hope during the darkest nights. Despite the world’s current state making such positivity hard to come by, the movie managed to deliver it with immense power, leaving me truly inspired.

Negative Reactions: “A 5/10 Stinker”
Roughly 35% of posts were critical, with detractors calling Superman overrated or even a flop.
- Grok specifically pointed out that one user dismissed it as a “5/10 stinker.”
- Others accused Warner Bros. of rushing it to digital as proof of weak box office legs ($588.7M worldwide total as of Friday, well under Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel).
- Some argued “hate watchers” were overanalyzing every scene, mocking standout moments as “garbage.”
For these fans, the digital release added fuel to ongoing skepticism about James Gunn’s new DCU.
Nahhhh the reviews for this movie were bought. Superman 2025 is a 5/10 STINKER!!!!

Superman drops on digital and the hate watchers go through the entire movie front to back just to quote one of the coolest scenes in the movie as garbage. https://t.co/UHmZ9gMfqA

Neutral Takes: Industry Norm
Approximately one out of every six posts maintained a neutral position, noting that major films like “Jurassic World: Dominion” are swiftly transitioning to digital platforms. In this case, the release of “Jurassic World: Rebirth” occurred in just 35 days on these platforms.
For them, this transition wasn’t a sign of failure but rather an inherent part of today’s swift production and distribution process. Some users observed that it demonstrates the quicker consumption and subsequent fading of films compared to previous times.

Mixed and Polarized Reactions
Approximately one in ten found the remaining mixture quite intriguing. Some relished re-watching it, yet felt disheartened by the caustic exchanges. Others diverted their attention away from Superman himself and towards what his return implies for the upcoming Peacemaker Season 2 and the broader DC Universe expansion.
After viewing the initial trailer, it was clear to me that the film wouldn’t follow the traditional “Superman” narrative but rather be more aligned with the broader DC Universe. I’m perfectly fine with this shift in direction.
From the initial teaser, it became clear to me that this wasn’t just a Superman film; instead, it seemed to be a movie set within the DC Universe. And that’s perfectly fine by me.

The Controversy
What’s being debated is whether Superman can really be called a commercial and critical success.
As a cinema enthusiast, I must admit that the impressive box office earnings of the latest film fell short of “The Batman,” raking in only $588.7M compared to its whopping $772M. Alas, it seems this movie won’t surpass Zack Snyder’s “Man of Steel” with its remarkable $670.1M (not adjusted for inflation).
Gunn is facing criticism for suggesting that the early digital release was deliberately timed to link with Peacemaker’s second season, which premieres on August 21. However, many fans find this explanation hard to accept.
A comparison to ‘Batman Begins’ or ‘Iron Man’ for Gunn’s ‘Supergirl’ makes sense only if it surpasses a billion dollars globally, which is highly improbable. Moreover, it’s even more challenging for it to reach the earnings of ‘Superman’.
Additionally, Gunn is currently working on a different DC Universe film, and it’s not a continuation of Superman 2. The question arises if this upcoming project stands a chance of reaching or even surpassing the billion-dollar milestone.
