Warner Bros. plans to speed up the online availability of Superman, moving it forward to Friday, August 15 – a decision that may cause surprise or displeasure among theater owners, as this release is set only 35 days after its initial cinema debut.
Original Date Moved Forward
The movie was originally slated to debut on digital channels on August 26th, but today WB revealed a new trailer, confirming an earlier release date. This shift means the film will be available for home viewing about two weeks sooner, even during its ongoing theater run, thus making ‘Superman’ accessible earlier for home viewers.

Possible Backlash from Exhibitors
Reducing the length of time before movies are available digitally could irritate movie theater owners, as they depend on exclusivity to boost ticket sales. Usually, major releases aim for a minimum of 45 days before going digital. If this period is reduced to 35 days, it may imply that Warner Bros. does not anticipate much additional revenue from keeping Superman in theaters longer, given the slowing box office numbers.

Current Box Office Performance
By Sunday, the total box office earnings of Superman amounted to approximately $579 million globally. Out of this, around $331 million was generated domestically, while about $247.8 million came from international audiences.
As of Sunday, Superman has grossed a worldwide total of $579.2 million; this includes $331.4 million earned in the U.S., with an additional $247.8 million from overseas.
The earnings from those foreign numbers are lagging behind the international box office success of “The Batman,” which raked in over $400 million and contributed to its global total of $772 million. If current trends continue, “Superman” might earn around $600-$630 million worldwide.
The earnings from this movie are significantly lower than Zack Snyder’s “Man of Steel,” which grossed more than $670 million (without adjusting for inflation).

Strategy Shift?
An initial digital launch could be a move by Warner Bros. to secure home entertainment income earlier, or perhaps boost anticipation for the upcoming DC Universe, prior to the airing of Supergirl.
Or it could be because the box office is stalling.
Additionally, it’s worth noting that James Gunn is still standing by the film’s financial aspects, addressing questions about its profitability and cost in the midst of discussions surrounding its breakeven point.
