SUPERMAN Becomes First DC Film to Cross $300 Million Since THE BATMAN

In James Gunn’s latest Superman movie, not only did the Man of Steel rescue Metropolis, but he seems to have revitalized the entire cinematic DC Comics universe. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Superman has surpassed $300 million at the domestic box office, making it the first DC film to achieve this feat in more than three years, since 2022’s The Batman. That year, the Matt Reeves reboot of Batman made $369 million domestically. While Superman may not reach that figure, it’s expected to come quite close. This renewed success positions Superman as one of DC’s two leading movie characters once again.

As a movie critic, I must admit that Batman has consistently been a box office titan, with only 1997’s “Batman & Robin” being an exception – a flop, indeed. However, when it comes to the rest of DC’s cinematic universe in the 21st century, it’s been a tumultuous ride marked by both triumphs and stumbles.

Films like “Superman Returns” and “Man of Steel” managed to tread water, but they never quite swam in the critical acclaim or commercial success that DC fans craved. On the other hand, we’ve seen legitimate blockbusters emerge with films like “Wonder Woman,” “Aquaman,” and the enigmatic “Joker.” Yet, productions such as “Justice League” left much to be desired, causing a significant stir among viewers.

The announcement that DC Studios was abandoning the old DCEU continuity sent shockwaves through the audience, causing interest in the remaining DC films to plummet. Recent releases like “The Flash,” “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom,” and even the charming “Blue Beetle” have either underperformed or flat-out flopped at the box office.

It’s worth mentioning that Superman and Marvel Studios films are facing challenges at international box offices, particularly in Asia, due to decreased interest in Western movies compared to previous years. The era where a blockbuster earned half its revenue from foreign box office sales seems to be fading, and it appears the days of multiple billion-dollar global hits may be a memory from before the pandemic. However, given that Superman has proven to be successful, a sequel is highly likely, which brings joy to fans who appreciated Gunn’s interpretation of the Last Son of Krypton.
