‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’ Casts Its Villain, and the Actor Was Once Second Choice to Play Batman in the DCEU

As a die-hard DC fan who’s followed the comics and Schoenaerts’ career for years, I must say this casting decision has left me utterly thrilled! The Belgian actor’s knack for portraying rugged, complex characters fits perfectly with Krem of the Yellow Hill’s enigmatic persona.

Supergirl: A Woman of Future Days” is one of the most eagerly awaited upcoming projects in the DC Universe, originating from the comic series by Tom King. Over the course of its limited run (from 2021 to 2022), this storyline has given Supergirl a more brooding and intricate personality than traditionally portrayed.

Instead of being sent to Earth as an infant like her relative Superman, Supergirl found herself on a shard of Krypton following its devastation, raising up in a tough and remote setting. She endured profound emotional turmoil due to the loss of those she cherished most after witnessing their demise.

It was announced several months back that Milly Alcock from House of the Dragon would be playing Supergirl (Kara Zor-El) in an upcoming film. Now, reports suggest that Matthias Schoenaerts has been cast as the villain in this movie, with the character being Krem of the Yellow Hill – the main antagonist from a limited comic series which serves as the basis for the film.

In the show, Krem originates from the Yellow Hills, but many details about his past are shrouded in mystery. Instead, the narrative predominantly concentrates on his deeds and criminal activities, offering little insight into any substantial history linked to his native land.

At some stage, Krem joins forces with the Kings of the Citadel, a formidable group with malevolent plans. This alliance grants him access to sophisticated weaponry, including Kryptonite, which he later employs against Supergirl. Notably, it was Krem who took the life of Supergirl’s father, serving as a significant trigger for her quest.

Matthias Schoenaerts, famous for playing intricate, tough characters in movies such as ‘Rust and Bone’, ‘Far from the Madding Crowd,’ and ‘The Danish Girl’, was previously considered for the role of Batman within the DC Extended Universe, according to Zack Snyder’s disclosure on the Happy Sad Confused Podcast.

As a devoted fan, I’ve had numerous conversations with Schoenaerts regarding this topic. Although he never donned the iconic suit, I did create several mock-ups featuring him, as Ben was hesitant. Frankly, who wouldn’t be when asked, ‘Do you want to play Batman?’ It’s a question that deserves careful consideration.

Despite not having played Batman, Schoenaerts has secured a part that could significantly shape the future of the DC Universe!
