SUPERGIRL Will Reveal More About DCU Krypton’s House of El

A major surprise in James Gunn’s Superman movie was the reveal that Kal-El’s parents, Jor-El and Lara, didn’t just send him to Earth to save him, but with a mission to conquer it, instructing him to “Show no mercy.” This discovery deeply disturbed Clark, who always believed his parents were selfless heroes. Some viewers wondered if Lex Luthor had tampered with the message from his parents, but both Mister Terrific in the movie and James Gunn himself confirmed that wasn’t the case. However, David Krumholtz, who plays a role in Supergirl, hinted in an interview with Nerdtropolis (as reported by Comic Book Movie) that there could be even more to the story of the House of El and their true goals. Here’s what Krumholtz said:

David Krumholtz shared that the new #Supergirl movie closely follows the “Woman of Tomorrow” comic book. He also told @SeanTaj he’s excited to contribute to the ongoing story of Krypton and the El family.

As a big fan of the original graphic novel, Woman of Tomorrow, I was really happy to see how faithfully this adaptation stuck to it. And honestly, I’m just thrilled to be part of expanding the story of Krypton and digging deeper into the history of the El family. It feels like a really important piece of the puzzle.

In the comic books, Supergirl and Superman are related – Supergirl’s father, Zor-El, is Superman’s father’s brother, Jor-El. Zor-El was one of the few who believed Jor-El’s warnings about Krypton’s destruction. He and his family survived the planet’s initial destruction by living on a piece of Krypton called Argo. However, the people of Argo eventually became sick from Kryptonite. To save their teenage daughter, Kara, they sent her to Earth, where she became Supergirl and fought alongside her cousin, Superman. Since she never met her uncle Jor-El, she wouldn’t know if her people had a history of being violent conquerors.

Krumholtz’s comments suggest Kryptonians might not all share the same values. It’s possible Jor-El was different from the rest of his family, or that his brother Zor held more peaceful beliefs. While the idea of a flawed Jor-El in the Superman movie surprised some fans, there’s already evidence in established storylines that Kal-El’s parents weren’t perfect. For example, in the 1980s Man of Steel comic reboot, Lara questions whether their son will conquer Earth and force humans to adopt Kryptonian customs. Jor-El doesn’t seem thrilled by this idea, but he doesn’t reject it outright. The Smallville series also hinted that Jor-El intended for his son to rule Earth. Ultimately, Supergirl promises to reveal even more about the history and culture of Krypton within the DC Universe.

Supergirl, directed by Craig Gillespie, hits theaters on June 26, 2026.
