Supergirl Takes Over Superman Day as DC Launches Summer of Supergirl

To coincide with the release of James Gunn’s latest film, DC is making Supergirl a major focus this year, kicking off a “Summer of Supergirl” celebration on April 18th.

To coincide with the release of James Gunn’s Supergirl movie, DC Comics is planning a large-scale promotion featuring Supergirl, timed for Superman Day in 2026.

Superman first appeared in Action Comics #1 on April 18, 1938, a truly historic moment. Now, almost 90 years later, his cousin is stepping into the spotlight to celebrate.

Supergirl Headlines Superman Day on April 18

DC is launching a worldwide series of promotions including in-store events, comic book signings, special editions, rewards for loyal fans, and online content, all happening at comic shops and other stores that are participating.

We’re working to generate excitement for the upcoming Supergirl movie in June and remind fans of some of the most beloved Supergirl comics of all time.

Look forward to new artist signings, special sales, collections focused on Supergirl, events at your local comic book stores, and unique editions for Superman Day. For the latest news, DC is also pointing fans to DC.com/Superman and their official @DCcomics social media account.

Woman of Tomorrow Leads the Charge

The graphic novel Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, created by Tom King and Bilquis Evely, is the main source of inspiration for the new movie being developed by DC Studios.

For Superman Day, DC is releasing:

  • Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow #1 Superman Day 2026 Special Edition (reprinting the first chapter)
  • A foil-enhanced Special Edition ($9.99)
  • A blank sketch cover edition ($4.99)
  • Multiple deluxe hardcover formats, including a Superman Day–exclusive dust jacket

DC is previewing From Comic to Screen: The Art of Supergirl: The Woman of Tomorrow, a beautiful hardcover book showcasing artwork and behind-the-scenes visuals from both the comic book and the movie. It also features a foreword written by Jim Lee.

Historic Facsimiles Return

Superman Day wouldn’t be complete without going back to the beginning.

DC is releasing replica editions of classic comics: Action Comics #1 Facsimile Edition and Action Comics #252 Facsimile Edition, both priced at $3.99.

Published in 1959, Action Comics #252 is famous for introducing Supergirl and the villain Metallo. It’s a significant comic in Superman’s history and perfectly complements a celebration of Supergirl.

Supergirl #1 Special Edition and Global Anthology

DC is also pushing new-era Supergirl material.

This special edition of Supergirl #1 reprints the first issue by Sophie Campbell, which begins Kara’s story returning to Midvale and introduces the events that continue in the Supergirl Vol. 1: Misadventures in Midvale collection.

I’m so excited about the preview I got of Supergirl: The World! It’s a really cool project – a collection of stories about Supergirl from creators all over the globe, representing 15 different countries. It’s amazing to see how Kara Danvers’ story connects with people everywhere. The complete hardcover book comes out in June 2026, and I’ve already marked my calendar!

Superman Still Gets His Moment

Even as Supergirl headlines the event, Superman remains a major part of the lineup.

This year’s Superman Day releases feature three special editions: Superman #1 (by Joshua Williamson and Jamal Campbell), DC Finest Presents Superman: Time and Time Again #1, and a deluxe edition of All-Star Superman which includes an exclusive dust jacket and a code for a digital movie.

As a huge superhero movie fan, I’d say this event really nails it. It’s awesome that they’re paying respect to Superman’s history, but it’s also exciting to see Supergirl finally take center stage. It feels like a perfect blend of honoring the past and building towards the future.

More Supergirl Titles This Summer

DC confirmed additional Summer of Supergirl plans, including:

  • Summer of Supergirl Special (one-shot)
  • Launch of Supergirl: Survive (Elseworlds series)
  • Facsimiles for Supergirl and the Legion of Super-Heroes #23 and Lobo #1
  • DC W.I.P.: Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow #1 (artbook-sized edition)
  • Supergirl-themed variant covers across DC’s line

Younger readers can also enjoy graphic novels such as Superman’s Good Guy Gang and Supergirl’s Zoo-per Heroes.
