Supergirl Star Matthias Schoenaerts Hit With Prison Sentence, Fine, and Driving Ban

Matthias Schoenaerts, the Belgian actor playing the villain in the new Supergirl movie, has been found guilty of driving without a proper license in Belgium.

This decision creates another legal issue for the actor, and it’s unclear how this might affect James Gunn’s plans for the DC Universe.

Six Months in Prison, One-Year Driving Ban

VRT reports that Schoenaerts was convicted by the Beringen police court while not present at the hearing, resulting in a sentence of:

  • 6 months’ imprisonment
  • €4,000 fine
  • A one-year driving ban
  • Mandatory retaking of all driving exams and recovery tests

Despite the sentence, he won’t be jailed immediately. Schoenaerts still has the option to appeal.

Repeated Offenses

He was found guilty after police stopped him twice in April 2024 – on the 5th and the 21st – for riding a motorbike without a proper license.

Schoenaerts lost his driving privileges in 2021 due to a drug offense and didn’t finish the necessary steps to get them back.

This isn’t an isolated problem. VRT reports Schoenaerts has 11 prior convictions in police court.

Not Related to Last Week’s Arrest

This decision doesn’t address his recent arrest. Last week, he was stopped in Pelt and reportedly declined a breathalyzer test, plus he didn’t have a current driver’s license.

Officers described him as “uncooperative.”

That incident is expected to result in a separate case.

Possible Impact on the DCU

Matthias Schoenaerts is the villain in the new Supergirl movie, which director James Gunn is currently promoting. Given that the film is already facing questions about its tone and some doubt from fans, this news isn’t ideal for Warner Bros.

Supergirl is scheduled to come out on June 26, 2026, which might create a tight window for promotion. This timing could mean the film’s main villain wouldn’t be able to participate in publicity events or interviews.

This also comes ahead of this weekend’s CCXP where the first Supergirl is expected to drop.

Release info

I’m really excited about the new Supergirl movie! Mily Alock is playing the lead, and Craig Gillespie is directing, which is awesome. Plus, Jason Momoa is going to be in it as Lobo – can you believe it? And I just learned that Schoenaert is playing Krem of the Yellow Hills, adding another interesting character to the mix.
