Supergirl: David Corenswet Superman Confirmed, Runtime, More

Now that the trailer is out, more information from James Gunn’s Supergirl press event is being shared.

The reactions have been divisive to say the least.

Producer Peter Safran announced at the event that the current cut of Supergirl is less than two hours long. He explained that the movie’s length was determined by the story itself, and that the filmmakers intentionally created a concise and focused film, rather than one that was unnecessarily long.

Superman Appears in the Film

GamesRadar confirmed that David Corenswet’s Superman appears in Supergirl.

Milly Alcock shared that the most challenging day of filming involved a scene with Superman entirely in the Kryptonian language, and it was filmed in very cold weather. The whole scene is spoken in Kryptonian.

Craig Gillespie’s Approach to Supergirl

Director Craig Gillespie shared that James Gunn and Peter Safran gave him the freedom to make his project stand out as something unique within the new DC Universe.

He explained that Supergirl is a story about an anti-hero who is deeply affected by past trauma, and whose upbringing was very unlike Superman’s.

Gillespie highlighted Kara’s emotional complexity and the darker tone driving her arc.

James Gunn on Milly Alcock and the Character

James Gunn shared that he’d considered Milly Alcock for the part for years, ever since seeing her in House of the Dragon.

He described Alcock’s audition as so strong it brought the team to tears.

Gunn highlighted that this Supergirl isn’t a flawless, polished hero, but a more realistic and complex character – heavily inspired by the approach taken in Tom King’s Woman of Tomorrow.

A Standalone Vision Within the DCU

Gillespie explained that Gunn advised him to approach Supergirl as a standalone graphic novel, giving it a unique style and feel instead of closely linking it to Superman.

This method allowed Gillespie to completely define the film’s look and feel, and guide its emotional impact.

Jason Momoa’s Lobo and Expanded Role

According to Safran, Jason Momoa is a lot like his character Lobo, and he actively campaigned to play the part.

We’ve learned that people involved with the production were very impressed with his acting, so his part in the project grew as filming continued.

DCU Merch Strategy and Brand Cohesion

Safran announced that a lot of new Supergirl products will be released soon. This is part of DC Studios’ plan to create a consistent brand image for all its movies, games, and merchandise.

As a huge DC fan, it was really exciting to hear about how they’re building everything to connect – not just in movies, but everywhere! They’re really expanding their reach, popping up in things like Fortnite and even creating some seriously cool, high-end collectibles. It feels like they’re trying to be everywhere, and honestly, I’m here for it.

Tone and Influences

James Gunn suggests the upcoming Supergirl movie could be more serious and emotionally complex than Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. He describes it as a story about growing up in space, blending funny moments with difficult experiences and character development.

Initial clips seem to heavily resemble the Woman of Tomorrow storyline, with the character Ruthye and important plot points being accurately recreated.

Other DCU Updates

Safran announced that the initial footage for Clayface will be available in January. He also hinted at a new, previously unannounced DCU show planned for next year, suggesting it might focus on Jimmy Olsen.

Supergirl gets released in theaters on June 26, 2026.
