‘Succession’s’ Brian Cox Slams Johnny Depp and Steven Seagal as ‘Overrated’ and ‘Ludicrous’”: “I feel I’ve upset a few people over the years”

As a seasoned gamer with over three decades of gaming under my belt, I can relate to Brian Cox’s experiences and opinions, albeit from a different perspective. Much like he navigates the complexities of the acting world, I’ve faced challenges within the vast digital realms we call games.

Approximately two and a half years ago, Brian Cox, during an appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live”, expressed some remorse for the comments he made about Johnny Depp in his book, “Putting the Rabbit in the Hat”. Specifically, he partially regrets calling Depp “overrated” and “exaggerated”.

In the book, Cox mentioned that he declined a part in the Pirates of the Caribbean film series as he found it to be an unappreciated role.

In simpler terms, the actor from “Succession” mentioned that he was somewhat comforted by not taking on the role. He considered the series to be primarily about Johnny Depp’s character, Jack Sparrow, and described Depp as excessively popularized and overvalued.

Cox admitted to Kimmel that his comments about Depp in the memoir seemed overly critical. “Sometimes we resort to an easy joke,” he explained, “and I think I did just that. In retrospect, I wish I hadn’t and I regret it. Generally, I’m not like that; I was just being a bit careless and light-hearted.

When Kimmel inquired about actors frequently believing they’re overrated, Cox responded, “I believe many actors do feel this way, and some might even think they’re underrated. To put it another way, most of them may feel they’re not recognized at all.

Two and a half years down the line, Cox admitted that he may have upset some people along the way, but regarding Depp and Seagal, he might feel the same way – that they are overrated. In essence, Cox isn’t saying anything they don’t already believe themselves.

Brian Cox has openly criticized method acting, describing it as “useless,” “self-absorbed,” and detrimental to the film set atmosphere. He notoriously labeled the approach taken by his co-star Jeremy Strong, who portrays one of his children in the show Succession, as “extremely irritating.

However, Cox seems more measured about it now, saying, “He was wonderful to act with. I had no argument with Jeremy’s acting.” Still, he added, “He would be an even better actor if he dropped that approach, allowing for more inclusiveness in his work.”

Isn’t it frustrating when you can’t have real conversations with a cast member because they’re always in character? “Well, it’s not good for the ensemble. It creates hostility. That’s the problem,” Cox said. Did he ever talk to Strong about it? “No, not in the way I would have liked to, but it’s a very sensitive topic for people who follow the Strasberg method.

Brian Cox recently hinted at Lee Strasberg, a renowned figure known for pioneering method acting in the U.S. Last year, Cox implied that Jeremy Strong’s intense portrayal on “Succession” could have been less taxing on his co-stars if he had adopted a more laid-back attitude: “Perhaps take a break, light up some cannabis in your trailer.

Does Cox personally consume marijuana? “Yes,” he openly confessed. What effect does it have on him? “It helps me unwind,” he explained. Cox disclosed that he didn’t learn about the benefits of marijuana until later in life, which was facilitated by an introduction from his girlfriend’s uncle at the time.

In a distinct Cockney tone, Cox reminisced, “I remember coming home one time, saying I was finding it tough to relax, and he suggested, ‘Ever thought of trying some herb?’

I was against it when I was younger because I thought drugs would mess up my career,” Cox explained. “But he said, ‘Why don’t you try some weed?’ So I did, and I thought, ‘Oh GOD! This is the perfect way to end the day.’”
