The latest season of “Stranger Things” is here, and the creators had a unique problem to solve: the actors who play the kids on the show have grown up since the series began.
The actors in the show have been playing their roles for nearly a decade, and the story occasionally requires them to appear as children. According to Salon, Netflix used digital technology to make the actors look younger for these scenes.
A recent scene offers a clear example of the show’s visual effects. Noah Schnapp, the actor who plays Will Byers, is now in his twenties, but the scene required him to appear much younger, so special effects were used to de-age him for a flashback.
According to Deadline, the scenes were filmed with a child actor, Luke Kotokek, who then had his face digitally replaced with a younger version of Noah Schnapp using visual effects.
The show has used this technique before. In a past season, they digitally altered Millie Bobby Brown’s face to create a younger Eleven, and a different actor physically played the role.
It’s still uncertain if more cast members will experience the same thing this season, but it’s definitely a possibility. While the technology used isn’t groundbreaking, it feels different because audiences have watched these characters – and the actors playing them – grow up. As Salon pointed out, even though time works differently in the show’s alternate dimension, the actors are still subject to natural changes.
Noah Schnapp explained to Deadline that he worked with the visual effects team to make sure the digital version of young Will Byers moved and acted like he did, helping to create a more realistic result.

He explained that he genuinely asked Millie for advice, wondering how she had managed a difficult situation with the child in the past. He had to reflect on his own past behavior while working on it. Although he felt the final result was a bit too digital in appearance, he was ultimately pleased with how it turned out.
