STRANGER THINGS: The Duffers Say Eleven’s Fate Is Truly Final

A key element of a satisfying story is a definite ending. However, many modern movie and TV franchises avoid this, constantly teasing potential returns of beloved characters. The Marvel Cinematic Universe quickly brought back Steve Rogers and Tony Stark, even after their apparent finales. While the final season of Netflix’s Stranger Things was long, the creators, the Duffer brothers, are confident they’ve reached a true conclusion – at least for Eleven, the Upside Down, and the heroes of Hawkins.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the creators of the show, the Duffer brothers, clarified that while the actors might speculate, they don’t necessarily see Eleven’s possible survival as a hint that she’ll come back later. As Matt Duffer explained:

Mike shutting the basement door is symbolic. It represents the end of the story for all the characters – Mike, Eleven, Joyce, and Hopper. The show was always meant to be a coming-of-age tale, and that closing door signifies the characters moving out of childhood and into adulthood. There are no plans to continue the story beyond that natural conclusion.

Duffer recently stated he’s not particularly excited about the idea of continuing the story with these characters, like Hopper, in the future. This raises questions about the planned live-action spin-off series. According to the co-creator, the spin-off will feel familiar yet offer a fresh take.

Ross and I are thrilled to introduce fresh characters and a new storyline, while still maintaining the core feel of Stranger Things. We feel like we’ve reached a natural conclusion with this final season, having told the complete story of these characters and the world of the Upside Down.

That probably marks the end for the Hawkins group… unless the people involved decide they want to revisit the story for financial reasons. That’s all from me!
