The creators of Stranger Things, the Duffer Brothers, have hinted at the show’s future. They’ve confirmed they’re working on a spin-off series, and that the recently released final episode contains a small clue about what’s next for the story.
Ross Duffer recently addressed some widely-held fan theories, clarifying what the upcoming spinoff series will and won’t involve.
The pair won’t be participating, as they recently agreed to a major contract with Paramount that begins in April.

The Stranger Things Spinoff Is Not What Fans Expect
In an interview with Deadline, Ross Duffer explained that the new spinoff series won’t center around characters we already know or simply continue the story of the original show.
He confirmed that a project focused on Hopper in Montauk won’t happen. He explained the mention of Montauk in the finale was just a tribute to dedicated viewers who remember the show was initially planned with that title.
He also dismissed the idea of a spinoff centered on Holly Wheeler or the younger kids.
Honestly, Ross explained it’s not going to be some huge, sprawling epic like some people are hoping. He said the plan is for something much more focused and contained – a smaller story, really.
Yes, we were just discussing this. While I’m hesitant to get into it, I want to clarify that Hopper won’t be getting his own show centered around Montauk. That idea was just a playful nod to dedicated fans who remember the series originally began as a project called Montauk.
It’s definitely not about Holly and her children, or anything on that scale. It’s a much more limited issue.

A New Story With a New Mythology
The creators of Stranger Things, the Duffers, have said the upcoming spinoff will feature a completely original story and set of rules, while still being part of the same universe as the original show.
Ross clarified that while the project is still in its initial stages, the plan is to create a completely new story set in the world of Stranger Things, instead of simply continuing the main plot.
The new series will finally address questions that were left unanswered at the end of the show – questions the creators deliberately didn’t fully resolve in the last season.
We’ve mentioned this previously, and while the spinoff is still in the early stages of development, it will explore a completely new set of stories and lore. It will tie into the original series and provide answers to questions fans have, including some left unresolved by the finale. However, it will ultimately stand on its own with its own unique narrative and mythology.
