‘Stranger Things’ Creators Reveal They Almost Killed a Main Character in Season 1

Fans of Stranger Things are constantly trying to predict who will die next. Each season sparks new theories about which characters might not survive, and with the fifth and final season on the way, that speculation is reaching a fever pitch.

The creators of the show, brothers Matt and Ross Duffer, are keeping potential dangers for this season a secret. However, they did reveal which of the main characters nearly died in previous seasons.

Matt Duffer recently told Entertainment Weekly that Hopper nearly died in season 3 of Stranger Things. While discussing the show, he revealed they actually considered killing off the character at the end of that season, and he believes Hopper came closer to death than at any other point in the series.

Fans were shocked when Hopper seemed to die in the explosion at the Starcourt Mall in season 3.

However, a subsequent preview revealed that Hopper hadn’t died, but had been captured by Russian forces and was being held as a prisoner of war. According to Ross, they decided to keep him alive because his character still had more development ahead and his story wasn’t complete. He emphasized that they prefer to finish character arcs thoughtfully, rather than simply killing characters for dramatic effect.

Matt Duffer revealed that Steve Harrington, portrayed by Joe Keery, nearly didn’t make it past the first season of the show. He explained that they quickly became fans of Joe Keery as an actor, and if they hadn’t, Steve’s character would have been cut.

The creators of the show, the Duffers, and the writers frequently discuss the possibility of killing off major characters. However, they always carefully consider the impact it would have on the story. As they put it, taking out a character like Mike, for example, would make the show overwhelmingly sad and focus everything on that loss.

The show pays close attention to even minor characters like Eddie, Bob, and Barb, making sure their deaths truly impact the storyline. The creators are also being deliberate with Billy Hargrove’s character. As Matt Duffer explained, they want any death to have meaningful consequences, so they’re careful about when and how often they include them.

Good news for Stranger Things fans! The fifth and final season will be released in three parts. The first four episodes will be available starting November 26th, followed by three more on Christmas Day. You can then see how the story ends with the finale, which will be in select cinemas and on Netflix on New Year’s Eve.
