The creators of Stranger Things, the Duffer Brothers, have explained the meaning behind the strange “white goo” that appeared during Jonathan and Nancy’s fight scene, which went viral online.
Viewers have been curious about the strange substance that emerged after Nancy launched the otherworldly material over Hawkins Lab in the Upside Down. This caused both her and another character to fall and become stuck as the glowing goo began to surround them.
Ross Duffer recently told Variety that the creators intentionally put Jonathan and Nancy in a dangerous situation, but didn’t want to actually hurt them. He explained that the strange, dark matter in the show causes things to melt and become unstable when it’s disturbed, and this is what happened to the lab in that scene.
Matt Duffer explained the concept using an analogy to the sun, stating that the exotic matter is initially circular but gradually slows and eventually stops melting as time passes.
The scene sparked a lot of conversation because many viewers didn’t initially understand it showed the couple breaking up. Matt Duffer explained to PEOPLE that it’s rare for high school sweethearts to stay together, saying, “How many people actually end up with someone they dated in high school?”
He described the scene as emotionally complex, explaining that while the characters deeply care for each other, they ultimately need to separate to grow and become independent. He emphasized the messy nature of their feelings throughout the scene.
The actors Charlie Heaton and Natalia Dyer, who play Jonathan and Nancy, received praise for the natural connection they shared on screen, which enhanced the scene.
This discovery reveals the meaning behind the puzzling white substance fans have noticed throughout the years. It wasn’t simply a visual quirk; it was a deliberate storytelling choice, used to build suspense and highlight the danger and emotional impact of the characters’ last scenes together.
