Stranger Things 5 Finale to Hit Netflix and Theaters Simultaneously

The last episodes of Stranger Things season 5 will be available to watch on Netflix and in certain movie theaters simultaneously – a first for a television show.

Netflix and Big Screen Premiere Set for December 31

The final episode of the series, number 508, will launch on Netflix worldwide on December 31st at 5 p.m. Pacific Time. Simultaneously, it will be shown in over 350 movie theaters across the U.S. and Canada for a special fan event that runs until January 1, 2026.

The Duffer Brothers called the dual release a longtime dream.

The Duffer brothers expressed their excitement that fans will be able to see the final episode of Stranger Things in movie theaters. They’ve wanted this for years and are thankful to Ted, Bela, and the team at Netflix for making it a reality. They believe watching it on the big screen with amazing sound and a packed audience is the ideal way to conclude the series—a truly awesome experience.

Details on ticketing and specific theater locations will be shared closer to the event.

A First for Streaming TV

Previous shows such as Game of Thrones and Stranger Things 4 held special screenings after being released online, but this is the first time a TV episode will launch at the same time in both theaters and on a streaming service. This approach—releasing content on the same day in multiple formats—is usually reserved for movies.

This change shows Netflix is rethinking its strategy. They used to avoid releasing movies in theaters, but lately they’ve started doing limited theatrical releases for some of their original films. The final season of Stranger Things is a big move in this direction, extending the practice to their series as well.

Final Season Release Schedule

Stranger Things 5 rolls out in three volumes:

  • Volume 1 (Episodes 501–504): November 26
  • Volume 2 (Episodes 505–507): December 25
  • Finale (Episode 508): December 31

All episodes debut at 5 p.m. PT / 8 p.m. EST on Netflix.

Story and Cast

It’s fall 1987, and things are still shaken up in Hawkins after the recent chaos. Vecna is gone, the government has taken control of the town, and Eleven is hiding. As the anniversary of Will’s disappearance approaches, the group must come together for one final showdown against a new, rising danger.

I’m so excited to see all my favorite actors returning! The cast is incredible – Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, David Harbour, Winona Ryder, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Sadie Sink, Noah Schnapp, Natalia Dyer, Charlie Heaton, Joe Keery, Maya Hawke, Priah Ferguson, Brett Gelman, Jamie Campbell Bower, Cara Buono, Amybeth McNulty, and even some new faces like Nell Fisher, Jake Connelly, Alex Breaux, and the legendary Linda Hamilton! I can’t wait to see what they all do this season.
