THE SHOPHOUSE is showcasing “Stillness in Blue – Captured Moments,” the first solo exhibition in Hong Kong by Korean ceramic artist Jaejun Lee, who is based in the UK. Following a successful show at Art Collaboration Kyoto last year, Lee is presenting his distinctive porcelain pieces, glazed in a signature lake-blue, and crafted from Korean clay he transported over 5,000 miles.

Lee’s artwork beautifully combines energy and tranquility. Each piece goes through many hidden steps – from initial shaping and glazing to the final touches – requiring both careful attention and an acceptance of what happens during the firing process. Lee sees the kiln as a deciding force; even with thorough planning, the final glaze and texture are always a surprise, helping him appreciate beauty in unexpected places and accept imperfections. This year’s exhibition is particularly meaningful because the Korean clay he’s relied on for 18 years is no longer being made, and he’s using his remaining supply to create a final tribute in porcelain.

One of the most striking parts of the exhibition features Lee’s moon jars. These are contemporary takes on traditional Korean vessels from the Joseon Dynasty, representing the Confucian values of simplicity and balance. While historically made by joining two pieces, Lee crafts his moon jars from porcelain with a unique, flowing lake-blue glaze. They capture the peaceful feeling of a full moon and showcase the artist’s strong ties to his culture, signaling a new direction for Lee’s work with otherthings by THE SHOPHOUSE.
