Steven Spielberg Will Return to Classic Sci-Fi Roots with Upcoming UFO Film, Says Writer David Koepp

As a seasoned gamer and long-time follower of Spielberg’s cinematic universe, I can’t help but feel a sense of childlike excitement at the prospect of this upcoming UFO film. With Jurassic Park being one of my all-time favorite franchises, having David Koepp return to the series with a focus on adventure and science is like finding that rare, elusive in-game item I’ve been searching for years.

Back in April 2024, it came to light that Steven Spielberg is developing a fresh film centered around UFOs, stemming from an idea of his own creation. David Koepp, who has previously teamed up with Spielberg on projects such as ‘Jurassic Park’, will be penning the screenplay for this project.

The upcoming movie, slated for a theater release on May 15, 2026 by Universal Pictures, boasts an outstanding lineup of stars like Emily Blunt, Colin Firth, Eve Hewson, and Colman Domingo. With its sci-fi genre, it’s one of the highly awaited films in the near future.

At present, we don’t have a lot of details regarding the movie. However, David Koepp, a long-standing collaborator of Spielberg, has given us some clues about what fans might anticipate, as he shared in his latest interview.

David Koepp has shared his plans to contribute to the ‘Jurassic Park’ series once more, as writer for ‘Jurassic World: Rebirth.’ This marks his first return since ‘The Lost World: Jurassic Park.’ Koepp mentioned that the chance to re-engage with the series, this time capturing the spirit of adventure and scientific exploration like the original film, was what brought him back.

He highlighted the importance of crafting a focused, purposeful narrative featuring fresh characters, devoid of unnecessary franchise constraints. Additionally, Koepp divulged his methodology in constructing “nine principles” for the movie, modeled after Chuck Jones’ guidelines for Roadrunner cartoons, to preserve continuity with previous films while still incorporating humor, scientific accuracy, and novelty.

As our conversation drew to a close during the interview, Koepp delved into an exciting upcoming collaboration with Spielberg. He likened the project to some of Spielberg’s timeless sci-fi creations, stating it “evokes a tone that might be slightly different from what he’s been working on recently.” It seems this project will bring back “something he used to do that he hasn’t done for a while,” hinting at its connection to his iconic earlier works. Despite his reluctance to share too many details, Koepp confirmed the film would undeniably reflect Spielberg’s classic style and legacy.

Indeed, it has a touch of science fiction about it. However, I’m not allowed to confirm this. But, yes, it does seem reminiscent of a style or tone he employed in the past, which he hasn’t used for some time.
