Steven Spielberg Opens up About His All-Time Favorite Superhero Film

Steven Spielberg has often expressed his concerns about the current popularity of superhero movies. He compared the trend to past cinematic fads, suggesting these films won’t stay popular forever. He specifically noted that the superhero genre could follow the same path as Westerns, which were once incredibly popular but eventually faded from prominence.

Although generally cautious with his praise, the director of Jurassic Park has spoken highly of films that break the mold. He’s previously admired classics like Richard Donner’s Superman and Jon Favreau’s first Iron Man, but Spielberg recently revealed that James Gunn’s 2014 film Guardians of the Galaxy made the biggest impression on him.

He particularly praised the movie’s lack of cynicism and its willingness to be both lighthearted and serious when appropriate, noting that it didn’t take itself too seriously. Spielberg’s preference for Gunn’s work seems to come from his beliefs about what makes a great character.

He draws a clear distinction between heroes and superheroes, saying he feels a stronger connection to the former. For Spielberg, a hero is simply an ordinary person who responds to a difficult situation and tries to make things better – like someone running towards a burning car to help.

He sees a superhero not as someone with magical abilities, but as a powerfully built person who would solve a problem with brute force – like literally flipping something upside down and shaking it until the issue is resolved. This focus on realistic, human weakness is common in his movies. Even when his characters face huge dangers, such as dinosaurs, they depend on their intelligence and bravery, not superpowers, to survive.

This summer, Steven Spielberg is returning to the world of science fiction with a new film called Disclosure Day, scheduled for release on June 12th. The movie boasts a fantastic cast, including Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor, Colin Firth, and Colman Domingo. Described as a large-scale UFO film, it’s an original story about how the world reacts to making first contact with extraterrestrial life, and reunites Spielberg with Jurassic Park writer David Koepp. Interestingly, James Gunn, who has Spielberg’s approval on superhero films, is currently in charge of rebooting the DC Universe.
