Steve Gonsalves, famous for his role on the TV show Ghost Hunters, recently shared the story of what he considers his most frightening encounter with the paranormal.
He told E! News that Waverly Hills Sanatorium in Louisville, Kentucky, was the most memorable location he visited.
Steve explained they’ll be investigating Waverly Hills Sanatorium in Louisville, Kentucky, a former tuberculosis hospital with a tragic history. He said over 60,000 people died there in just three years. He described the building’s atmosphere as intensely active, with frequent paranormal occurrences like apparitions, doors slamming shut, moving objects, and disembodied voices. According to Steve, the activity starts immediately upon entering the building.
Waverly Hills first opened in the early 1900s when tuberculosis was widespread. The five-story hospital cared for many patients until it closed in 1961. New antibiotics had made places like Waverly Hills, designed to treat TB, no longer needed.
The building became famous for its mysterious events and is now considered one of the most haunted places in the country. Now, people can visit on historical tours, join paranormal investigations, or attend special events.
Let me tell you, visiting Waverly Hills really got to me. I’d wanted to go for years, and the place is just… stunning. Driving up that winding road, surrounded by trees, was already unsettling, but when the building finally came into view, I actually started to tear up. It’s a beautiful, gorgeous, and surprisingly emotional experience. It’s not just spooky; it’s breathtaking.
He added that the hospital’s difficult past made the experience particularly touching. He explained, “Knowing the sadness and loss that occurred there definitely pulled at your heartstrings. I really thought it was wonderful.”
Steve suggested watching John Carpenter’s horror film, The Thing, for a scary night in. He believes it’s a must-see movie, not just for Halloween, but anytime of the year.
Even experienced paranormal investigators like Steve can be strongly impacted by places with a dark past. Waverly Hills Sanatorium continues to be a must-visit location for those fascinated by ghosts or American history.
