Sterling K Brown Reveals His Shock Over Paradise Twist: ‘I Thought I Was Just Looking At…’

Actor Sterling K. Brown returns to our screens, joining forces once more with the creator of This Is Us, Dan Fogelman, in the political thriller “Paradise,” which is set to premiere on streaming platform Hulu.

In the first episode of the show, which aired on Sunday, January 26th, Brown portrays Xavier Collins, a secret service agent and sole parent, who unexpectedly finds himself enmeshed in a startling murder investigation. Even though he’s worked with Fogelman for a while, Brown was surprised by the unexpected turn of events in the pilot episode.

In Paradise, the main character Xavier Collins, portrayed by Brown, stands accused of President Cal Bradford’s murder, played by James Marsden. The initial episode shows Xavier uncovering the deceased president and subsequently embarking on a self-led investigation into the crime.

But here’s an intriguing turn of events: Xavier discovers that he and others are actually imprisoned within a meticulously managed subterranean shelter. This revelation deepens the enigma surrounding the president’s murder and their own confinement.

As a die-hard admirer, I must confess that even though I’ve collaborated with Fogelman previously, the twist in Paradise left me utterly stunned! Looking back on my response, I shared with People, “You clever devil, you’ve done it again!

Initially, I anticipated diving into a classic political thriller, but instead found myself navigating an entirely distinct narrative. To my surprise, I found myself engrossed in a plot that delved deeper than who assassinated the president – it was far more intricate and engaging than I had initially expected.

The revelation left him taken aback, exclaiming, “I can’t believe it all happened here, in this underground shelter, where artificial light isn’t the real deal, and these birds aren’t ordinary ducks at all!

Apart from being thrilled about the upcoming twist, Brown is also eager to reconnect with Fogelman, a long-standing collaborator. They worked together on This Is Us from 2016 to 2022, and now, they find themselves in a familiar yet novel environment once more.

Brown mentioned that Fogelman crafted the role of Xavier specifically for him. He had gone through 106 of Fogelman’s scripts before reading the pilot, making it the 107th. Brown found it to be just as excellent as the 106 he previously collaborated on with Fogelman in This Is Us.
