The movie version of Stephen King’s novel “The Long Walk” has taken a winding path to theaters. Initially slated for production in 2019 under the direction of André Øvredal, the production subsequently switched producers.
In November of 2023, Francis Lawrence took over as the appointed director, and the ownership transferred from New Line Cinema to Lionsgate. Toward mid-2024, casting negotiations started, with Cooper Hoffman and David Jonsson initially rumored to be in discussions. By July, a complete cast was finalized, featuring actors such as Hoffman, Jonsson, Garrett Wareing, Tut Nyuot, Charlie Plummer, Ben Wang, Jordan Gonzalez, Joshua Odjick, and Roman Griffin Davis.
The movie has been scheduled for a theater premiere on September 12, 2025, as announced at this year’s Lionsgate presentation during CinemaCon.
During the making of “The Long Walk”, it was disclosed that the cast filmed scenes sequentially, implying they adhered to the sequence of events depicted in the script as the story unfolded.
In most film productions, scenes aren’t typically filmed in the order they will appear in the movie. However, there were some particularly challenging shooting days, where actors might have walked as much as 10-15 miles to accurately depict the arduous nature of the narrative’s journey.
Under the pen name Richard Bachman, Stephen King penned “The Long Walk,” a chilling dystopian tale. This novel centers around a grueling, government-controlled race where one hundred teenage boys are forced to walk non-stop. If they falter excessively or pause for extended periods, they are mercilessly gunned down.
