The Institute is a horror series based on Stephen King’s novel of the same name. Created by Benjamin Cavell and directed by Jack Bender – who both also executive produced the show – it stars Ben Barnes, Mary-Louise Parker, and Joe Freeman. The series follows a teenager who finds himself in a strange location with other children who have unique powers, and as he investigates, he discovers the institute’s disturbing truths.
The show first launched on MGM+ on July 13, 2025, with eight episodes in its initial season. Following a positive response, MGM+ quickly ordered a second season in August 2025. The series stars Ben Barnes as Tim Jamieson, Joe Freeman as Luke Ellis, Simone Miller as Kalisha, Fionn Laird as Nick, Hannah Galway as Wendy Gullickson, Julian Richings as Stackhouse, Robert Joy as Dr. Daniel Hendricks, Martin Roach as Chief Ashworth, and Mary-Louise Parker as Ms. Sigsby.
The series received generally mixed reactions from critics. Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 65% approval rating based on 23 reviews, with critics saying it’s a well-made but somewhat predictable adaptation of Stephen King’s novel, offering enough suspense to be worth watching. Metacritic assigned it a score of 51 out of 100, also indicating mixed to average reviews.
Viewers who enjoyed season one can look forward to more secrets about the institute and its gifted children being revealed when the new season arrives on MGM+.
