Stephen King Joins Mike Flanagan’s The Dark Tower Adaptation: ‘It’s Happening’

As a passionate cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that Mike Flanagan is taking the helm for his cinematic interpretation of Stephen King’s cherished fantasy epic, The Dark Tower. Known for his captivating work on Doctor Sleep and Gerald’s Game, Flanagan has promised fans that this adaptation will stay true to the books. What makes this project even more intriguing is the confirmation from none other than King himself, who has joined forces with Flanagan in bringing this story to life.

At the IGN Fan Fest 2025 event, King was questioned about his plans for adding fresh content to the upcoming adaptation. In response, he stated, “All I can disclose is that it’s in progress. I am currently writing material… I’m engaged in the process right now, and revealing too much feels like it might bring bad luck.

Ever since King embarked on crafting the epic saga known as The Dark Tower series way back in 1970, these books have grown to be an integral part of his literary empire. Though I can’t say for certain what fresh ideas he might be developing for the upcoming adaptation, one thing is undeniably clear: Flanagan is wholeheartedly committed to breathing life into this tale in a way that stays true to its essence.

Back when I was chatting with him, Flanagan expressed that if he were to tackle “The Dark Tower,” it wouldn’t resemble anything like “Star Wars” or “Lord of the Rings.” Instead, it would embody the spirit of the books themselves.

Fans have longed for an improved take following the 2017 film with Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey that fell short of expectations. However, no specific launch date has been announced yet. Still, Flanagan is busy with several King projects on his agenda; one of them being “The Life of Chuck“, scheduled for May release, and a Carrie series currently in development for Amazon.

Thanks to King’s personal involvement now, the adaptation of “The Dark Tower” appears to be progressing towards a rendition that fans have long anticipated.
