For over a week, fierce wildfires have been burning in Los Angeles, leaving devastation in their wake and claiming at least 25 lives. These fires, intensified by extreme dryness and powerful gusts, have impacted approximately 45 square miles of heavily inhabited regions.
Multitudes of firefighters are working around the clock to quell the blazes, yet the destruction is extensive, causing numerous residents to flee their homes. The Palisades and Eaton Fires, ignited on January 7, have razed countless buildings and persist in burning, though efforts to contain them are being made.
Given the circumstances, it’s no wonder that numerous individuals, even famous ones, are discussing it on various online platforms.
With the Oscars rapidly approaching, we find ourselves tallying up nominations and speculating which movie will be the ultimate winner. However, instead of focusing on Hollywood’s big night, Stephen King is proposing something entirely different.
Stephen King, a well-known figure, has suggested canceling this year’s Oscars because of the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles. In a post on Bluesky, he expressed his views by saying, “I won’t be voting for the Oscars this year. In my opinion, they should be cancelled. It seems wrong to have glamour events when Los Angeles is on fire.
Opting out of participating in the Oscars this year, as I personally believe they should be postponed or even cancelled under these circumstances. It seems inappropriate to me to celebrate Hollywood glamour when Los Angeles is facing such a devastating fire.

Regardless of any obstacles, the Academy has affirmed that the Oscars scheduled for 2025 will occur on March 2nd. The reasoning behind holding the ceremony is that cancelling it wouldn’t assist anyone, but using the worldwide platform to gather funds for wildfire relief could potentially be advantageous.
As a thoughtful observer, I can anticipate that the Oscars will prioritize aid for those affected by the fires, all the while ensuring our efforts don’t seem callous or insensitive.
The Academy’s officials have chosen to move forward with the Oscars as scheduled, maintaining an elegant atmosphere while raising funds for those affected by wildfires. Previously, Jean Smart and Stephen King had proposed canceling the event and using the earnings to aid fire victims. However, their suggestions, similar to King’s, sparked criticism.
Among Bluesky’s followers, both right and left-leaning individuals voiced their disagreement towards cancelling the event. One user highlighted that workers of awards shows have been financially impacted by COVID-19 and union negotiations, while another suggested that America could benefit from a diversion amidst current difficulties, expressing the sentiment that “the show should continue.
