Stellar Blade Is Right To Leave Its PlayStation Exclusivity Behind, And Here’s Why

Stellar Blade quickly became a hit for several reasons. It’s a well-made action game, and while the main character, Eve, is visually stunning, she’s a fairly typical protagonist. Importantly, it was a completely new game when players were really craving fresh experiences. Plus, as a major exclusive for the PS5, Sony provided significant publishing and financial support to Shift Up for their first console game.

I was immediately captivated when I first saw the trailer for Stellar Blade during a PlayStation event. The game promised a compelling sci-fi world and an intriguing story centered around an android character. While the final game didn’t quite live up to the potential of Nier: Automata, I remained excited about it. Stellar Blade felt like a much-needed breath of fresh air for PlayStation, offering something unique in a generation that had been lacking standout titles.

Stellar Blade initially gained attention as a PlayStation exclusive, but it’s become even more popular since being released on PC. Shift Up, the game’s developer, recently highlighted that Stellar Blade’s PC performance has surpassed that of many older, well-known games that were also released on the platform.

How Well Did Stellar Blade Perform On PC?

Stellar Blade became available on PC in June, and Shift Up recently announced that it sold over one million copies on that platform in just three days. Combined with sales across all platforms, the game has now sold a total of three million copies. This is a remarkable achievement for any game, but especially impressive for a new franchise that doesn’t rely on established characters.

The presentation playfully compared Stellar Blade’s sales to those of other Sony-published games recently released on PC, including The Last of Us Parts 1 & 2, Horizon Zero Dawn, Days Gone, and Spider-Man.

While Helldivers 2 also launched on both PlayStation and PC, its success isn’t really the point when looking at Stellar Blade. Stellar Blade has become more popular than many of Sony’s other big games, and it’s not a surprise given the game was clearly designed to appeal to PC players.

Stellar Blade’s character, Eve, is known for her revealing outfits, which have become a key feature of the game. The PlayStation 5 version includes many costumes to unlock, and even more have been added through updates and downloadable content. Now that the game is on PC, players can use modifications to drastically change Eve’s appearance and customize her even further.

I’m not interested in the modifications available on the PC version, like those changing character appearances or adding nude filters, but I suspect some players specifically use that version for those features. Some may have already played the game on consoles and saw this PC port as a way to explore those kinds of modifications. While the game itself is a decent action title, it feels empty when you consider the way the character Eve is sexualized.

So, how does this enthusiastic fanbase connect to the rumors of Stellar Blade 2 coming to more platforms? It’s actually a very direct connection.

Stellar Blade 2 Doesn’t Need PlayStation To Succeed

Stellar Blade initially launched as a game only available on the PlayStation 5, and it likely drove many gamers to purchase the console. Before release, the game generated a lot of excitement and discussion online. Once it was finally available, players quickly began experiencing and sharing their thoughts. While Sony originally supported the game’s development, Stellar Blade has gradually become well-known in its own right, separate from its origins as an exclusive title.

The popularity of the PC version of Stellar Blade, and the announcement that the sequel will be released on various platforms—not just PlayStation—shows Shift Up is in a strong position. They clearly have the funding, skilled developers, and a good reputation to expand. The game’s dedicated fanbase will likely support Stellar Blade 2 on any platform, continuing to praise its main character, Eve, regardless of whether they’re playing on PS5 or potentially on a new Nintendo console.

This situation feels similar to what happened with Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, which initially launched only on PlayStation 5, even though the first game later became available on Xbox and PC. Games like Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Rebirth are also gradually expanding to other platforms, allowing more players to enjoy them and boosting Square Enix’s revenue. These releases challenge the traditional rules of console exclusivity, which seem less and less relevant these days.

When the PS5 first came out, Stellar Blade felt more crucial for the console’s success than the other way around. While Sony provided support with publishing and development, the PS5 really needed a strong exclusive title, especially since Sony hadn’t been releasing many first-party games. Stellar Blade boosted PS5 sales, generated a lot of buzz, and captured global attention. The upcoming sequel is expected to have the same impact, but it won’t be exclusive to PlayStation anymore.
