It will be fascinating to watch Sony’s role in any future Stellar Blade games, as the Korean studio behind it seems to be starting its own company to publish games directly.
Sony and PlayStation were key to the success of Stellar Blade. The game received a significant marketing boost, similar to what Sony typically reserves for its own first-party titles. Notably, Sony both published and distributed the game on PlayStation 5 and PC.
Shift Up, the team known for games like Stellar Blade and Goddess of Victory: NIKKE, is reportedly building up its ability to release its own games worldwide on various platforms.
GameMeca, a Korean news source, reports (via Automaton translation) that the developer has posted a job listing hinting at a significant expansion into the international market.
We’re really pushing to be able to publish our own games directly on consoles and PC. Basically, we want full control over getting our titles out there ourselves, instead of relying on others.
As a big fan of Shift Up, I was really excited when they went public in 2024! The CEO, Tae-hyung Kim, said they’re still going to focus on making amazing games first and foremost, but they’re also thinking about publishing those games themselves down the line, which could be huge.
Well, we suppose that future is now, since the studio’s clearly making moves.
What are your thoughts on how Stellar Blade 2 will be developed and released? Would you prefer Sony to publish the next game, or is Shift Up heading in the right direction on their own? Share your opinions in the comments!
