Stefan Enslin on ‘Pigcasso: Million Dollar Pig’

Known South African filmmaker Stefan Enslin (of “War Dogs and I” and “Against All Odds”), recently debuted his new documentary titled “Pigcasso: Million Dollar Pig” at the Durban International Film Festival. This fascinating movie narrates the incredible true tale of Pigcasso, a pig that was saved from a slaughterhouse who astonished everyone by learning to paint, with some of his artworks fetching thousands of dollars.

As a devoted cinephile, I delve deep into the captivating bond shared by Pigcasso and her savior, Joanne Lefson – a story that showcases the incredible intellect of animals, creative self-expression, and unwavering compassion. It’s a privilege to share my insights on the behind-the-scenes creation of this film with you all; Spling was gracious enough to grant me an exclusive interview where I shared my personal experiences in bringing Pigcasso’s incredible tale to life, offering a unique perspective on the hurdles and victories encountered along the way.

How did you become attached to this larger-than-life story and what impressed you most about it?

A while back, I paid a visit to Farm Sanctuary SA alongside some friends. There, I chanced upon a pig who could paint! It was an entirely novel sight for me, something I had neither witnessed nor heard about previously. Needless to say, it piqued my curiosity instantly. The very next day, I contacted Joanne to deliberate on the concept of producing a documentary around this unique phenomenon.

She had mentioned that multiple producers had shown interest previously, yet none delivered, which explained her wariness. However, after a discussion with me where I emphasized my sincerity and dedication, things began to align smoothly.

Beyond the novelty of a painting pig, what was the core human story or message you aimed to convey through Pigcasso’s journey in the documentary?

Initially, I assumed the narrative would primarily focus on Joanne and the inception of Pigcasso’s painting, with the human angle developing from there. However, I was taken aback by how impactful Pigcasso’s personal journey became. Her life resonated deeply with many who feel constrained by their situations, believing they won’t get a chance to fully flourish. The tale of Pigcasso underscores the potential for the extraordinary when given the right chance.

What were some of the challenges of documenting an animal with such unique talents?

Creatures naturally follow their own pace, not responding to commands like a stage act. Occasionally, we’d seize magical instances that seemed as if Pigcasso was aware of each camera’s position. However, there were times when she preferred slumber, refusing to stir an inch. Many days were spent at the sanctuary in anticipation of her waking up, but often returned home with minimal or no suitable footage. This experience instilled patience within me and made me more receptive to life’s unpredictable moments.

Pigcasso’s art has garnered significant attention and sales. How did you balance the commercial aspects of her work as opposed to the themes of animal welfare and artistic expression?

In contrast to many animal documentaries emphasizing welfare concerns, the focus of this film is on Pigcasso, not just as an animal with a message but as a unique artist. While I incorporated themes of animal welfare within the setting of the sanctuary, the core content delves into her remarkable creativity. The art that she produced served as a window into her inner universe, while the sanctuary underscored the tranquil environment where she found solace.

What did you learn through Pigcasso and Joanne Lefson’s uncommon bond and communication?

It’s commonly underestimated how intelligent and emotionally perceptive animals can be. When given love and respect, they return the favor with loyalty and warmth. The connection between Joanne and Pigcasso was powerful and heartwarming, demonstrating that human-animal bonds, rich in meaning and emotion, are not just feasible but extraordinarily enriching.

Joanne has led an extraordinary life in her own right… was it easy to keep Pigcasso front and centre or was there more overlap than you’d expected?

When the star is a painting pig named Pigcasso, it’s quite effortless to maintain attention on her. However, as Pigcasso’s health weakened, the attention inevitably shifted. As time went by, Joanne stepped into the limelight not due to planning but because she had grown so closely associated with Pigcasso’s tale and heritage.

How did your initial vision for the story evolve over the filmmaking process?

Initially, I planned to make a cheerful documentary featuring a remarkable animal displaying an unusual skill. However, as Pigcasso’s health deteriorated, the narrative shifted dramatically. It transformed into a profoundly moving piece, serving as a heartfelt tribute to a life that left a deep impact on many, in ways I could never have anticipated.

Can you tell us about your choices in terms of the visual style and pacing for the documentary?

In my creative approach, I aimed to capture the essence of the artist through the visual style. This entailed merging rough, home-recorded footage that Joanne had accumulated throughout the years with polished cinematography. This juxtaposition resulted in a visually rich and authentic language. Furthermore, since Pigcasso moved leisurely and thoughtfully, I chose to match the pace to this natural rhythm, which gave the film a reflective atmosphere that seemed fitting for her character.

The story of Pigcasso touches on animal rights and our perception of farm animals. How did you address these broader issues within the film?

Instead of advocating for animal rights in the conventional sense, I allow Pigcasso’s life story to be its own powerful testament. Rescued from a grim fate, she lived an extraordinary life that surpassed all expectations. This stark contrast speaks louder than any data or debates could. It underscores the potential for change when we prioritize compassion over convenience.

Which part of the documentary are you most proud of?

The whole movie resonates deeply with me, as each scene contributes to a story that carries significant meaning. I’m thankful for the opportunity to be involved in its telling, and I can rewatch it multiple times with a sense of pride. There’s an enduring quality to Pigcasso’s tale that continues to motivate and inspire me.

What kind of impact do you hope this documentary will have on our understanding of animal
intelligence, creativity and the value of non-human lives?

As a movie-goer, I can’t help but express my heartfelt hope that this film transforms our perception of animals. They are not mere passive creatures, but unique individuals brimming with personality, intelligence, and emotional depth. The captivating interactions between Pigcasso and other animals, as well as humans, at the sanctuary have broadened my own understanding of their inner lives, revealing a richness that I hadn’t previously imagined. I can only wish that viewers leave this film with a renewed sense of respect for all living beings, inspired to see them not just as creatures, but as complex and fascinating beings with stories yet to be told.

If you had to do it all over again, what would you do differently?

Reflecting on it now, I wish I’d devoted more time to filming Pigcasso’s eyes during our sessions. Upon rewatching the footage, I was struck by the depth of emotion and understanding they seemed to convey. There was an unmistakable humanity in those eyes that really stood out when I was editing the video. I can’t help but feel I missed a valuable opportunity to capture more of that unique quality.

What do you hope audiences take away from your documentary?

It’s important that animals are given more than just our pity; they deserve our admiration and companionship. My hope is that people not only find Pigcasso inspiring, but also consider the way we interact with animals in a broader sense. When we treat them as equals, the connections we forge can be deeply transformative.
