As a seasoned gamer with decades of pixels, polygons, and virtual worlds under my belt, I can confidently say that this year’s Steam explosion has left me both thrilled and slightly overwhelmed. The sheer number of new games added to the platform is nothing short of breathtaking, and yet, here I am, still finding comfort in the familiar four titles I manage to play throughout the year. It seems the allure of the new remains as elusive as ever!
For numerous gamers like us, Steam has been our preferred destination for discovering fresh gaming adventures. In this current year alone, it’s introduced an impressive 18,825 new games, outnumbering the 14,311 games added last year.
The new offerings are divided into two main sections: 14,888 games labeled as “limited” and 3,937 identified as “standard.” Limited games come with restricted personalization options due to not meeting certain qualifications, such as having a large player community or high sales numbers.
It’s interesting to note that while more games are now accessible, the typical Steam user tended to play just four different games throughout the year, a figure similar to what we saw last year, but slightly lower compared to 2022.
Over the holiday period, close to 40 million people were logged on at the same time, which was approximately 8 million more than the figure from the previous year.
Regarding the hardware, Steam has stated they will not provide yearly updates for their portable gaming device, the Steam Deck. Instead, they aim to launch new models of the device only when there’s a substantial advancement in processing capabilities. This approach ensures that any upgrades delivered will offer noticeable enhancements in performance.
As I’m immersed in the thrilling world of gaming, it’s clear that other brands are making a splash in the portable gaming scene too. MSI unveiled their new-age handheld consoles towards the end of last November, and it looks like Lenovo and Asus will follow suit with their versions early next year, 2025.
This year, Steam provided some crucial explanations and changes. They reminded their users that buying games through the platform doesn’t mean they own the games permanently. Moreover, Steam discontinued support for Windows 7 and 8, urging users to update to more recent operating systems. For those looking for alternatives, transitioning to Ubuntu 20.04 LTS or later versions is suggested since Steam does back these free operating systems.
This holiday season, with so many game options at your disposal, you’ll find no dearth of titles to delve into. Regardless if you prefer adrenaline-pumping action, tactical strategy challenges, or captivating role-playing escapades, Steam offers a rich library catering to all tastes.
