At Rock Paper Shotgun, we don’t assign numerical scores to reviews. While some people may argue that it’s due to our belief that numeric scores oversimplify the complex, unique, and subjective experiences games provide, the truth is a bit more humorous: when we’re hired, we receive refurbished keyboards with number keys stuck together from old Marmite residue, and none of us fancy cleaning them.
In the past, I have handled game scoring duties, but listen carefully, as I am going to share a story that could potentially tarnish my reputation for good: On certain instances, I found it necessary to subtract 0.2% from a game’s score due to its inconvenience when attempting to alt+tab out in order to take notes. I stand firm on this decision, as this is an accessibility feature essential for me to jot down important observations like “more akin to ASSassin’s Creed: BORING lmao lol” without delay.
I recently discovered that Steam introduced a year ago a feature allowing users to open a notepad from the overlay tab for note-taking, which I became aware of due to a recent update enabling access to these notes on the web (thanks, PC Gamer). It seems many users are delighted about this new function! Initially, I wondered why anyone would find it useful other than myself. Then, I recalled the occasional blank sections in the back of game manuals. Subsequently, I thought about recent games like Lorelei And The Laser Eyes and Suikoden I & II HD Remastered that still incorporate note-taking. Fortunately, this appears to be an uncomplicated feature addition for Steam.
It turns out that there are numerous additional applications. As Redditor bugfix00 expresses, “It would be great if we could include notes on games in our wishlist. I have amassed a large collection of games over the years and often forget why I added them.
A different Reddit user named Madnesis mentions: “Attempting to put a screenshot into my notes while the Steam overlay is active results in the ‘⍰’ symbol being pasted instead of the actual screenshot. I’m really relieved I found a workaround, but it would have been much more helpful if I had known about it earlier – so I could have recorded all those STALKER 2 artifact locations directly into my Steam notes.
Alongside the web notes feature, the recent Steam beta update includes enhancements for displaying notifications about ongoing achievements, particularly in big picture mode. It also addresses issues with video recording in Monster Hunter World, and supports the 8BitDo Micro gamepad – a compact controller that seems appealing to own but may be challenging to use, especially if you just typed ‘8’ and now have your fingers sticky with Marmite.
