Starfleet Academy Season 2 Canceled Before Season 1 Even Airs (Rumor)

The upcoming Paramount series titled Starfleet Academy is facing criticism even before its debut, and now there’s a buzz that Season 2 might have been canceled, as per a recent rumor spread by the Tachyon Pulse Podcast on YouTube.

If accurate, this might represent a severe loss of confidence in the Academy, which has been under fire after the disastrous teaser trailer release. The video has garnered over 30,000 dislikes on YouTube compared to only 6,900 likes.

If it’s true, this could be a strong sign that people don’t trust the Academy anymore due to their recent unpopular teaser trailer, which has received more dislikes than likes on YouTube (30,000 vs 6,900).

Skydance Reportedly Not Impressed

As per Tachyon Pulse reports, Skydance – the current manager of Paramount content – has viewed early cuts of Starfleet Academy’s first season and appears to have mixed feelings about it. Furthermore, there are rumors that the production is quite costly, which could potentially lead to the decision to postpone or cancel Season 2 altogether.

The YouTube video explains that due to their ongoing agreement with Paramount, Alex Kurtzman’s production company, Secret Hideout, holds the exclusive rights to create Star Trek shows. If Paramount declines (as was the case with Prodigy), Secret Hideout can then offer these shows for distribution on platforms such as Netflix, Amazon, or other networks.

That scenario may now be playing out again with Academy, according to the YouTuber:

It appears that Skydance has already reviewed a significant portion of ‘Academy’ season 1, including early edits. Based on their feedback, it seems they are not very satisfied and the production is quite costly.”

“In essence, they have a deal where they hold the rights to Star Trek in principle but must first offer it to Paramount.

History Repeating Itself?

The situation with “Star Trek: Prodigy” mirrors the following: Paramount decided against producing Season 2, and Secret Hideout then sold it to Netflix, who are now broadcasting it instead (Netflix chose not to commission a third season).

If Season 2 of the Academy has already been shot or is almost done (rumored to start filming shortly), a similar situation might arise, particularly if Paramount decides to leave.

If accurate, this situation would certainly be a significant source of embarrassment for Alex Kurtzman, who jointly oversees “Academy”. Furthermore, such an occurrence might indicate Skydance’s growing uncertainty about supporting Kurtzman’s artistic concept for “Star Trek”. It’s also whispered that a new Star Trek reboot will be initiated once the merger is finalized.

Why the Cancellation Rumor Matters

The unverified yet credible gossip hints at significant doubt concerning the forthcoming state of the ‘Academy’ and Star Trek under Kurtzman’s leadership.

The rumor, although not officially confirmed, has a convincing ring to it, indicating potential concerns about the future of the ‘Academy’ and Star Trek as led by Kurtzman.

If Season 1 premieres on Paramount+ in 2026 and Season 2 is subsequently canceled, it would strongly imply that the studio lacks faith in the series’ success. Furthermore, this move might lend credence to whispers of a complete Star Trek reboot spearheaded by Skydance.

It seems that the Star Trek franchise is drifting further into uncharted territory as “Strange New Worlds” veers towards musical numbers and puppet episodes (concluding with Season 5), and “Starfleet Academy” already being cut online, making it appear that the franchise is losing its course.

Release info

The first season of “Star Trek Academy” will debut on Paramount+ in the beginning of 2026. Meanwhile, the third season of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” is already available for streaming.
