Initially, it was intended to challenge norms, revealing an aspect of the galaxy quite different from the familiar, kid-friendly stories we’re accustomed to. Instead, the idea was to delve into the darker, unpolished corners of this cosmos, and it promises to be a thrilling journey.
The project boasted an exceptional team, with renowned composer John Williams, known for his timeless Star Wars soundtracks, involved in composing the music. This fact alone would have given it an authentic feel as part of the saga. Moreover, approximately 60 scripts were nearing completion, indicating a well-defined roadmap for the story’s progression.
However, what’s astonishing is that each installment of the series was estimated to cost an astounding $40 million. By today’s measures, that’s a significant sum, indicating the grand scale and ambition of the production.
Instead of creating something weekly with a high-end movie aesthetic, regrettably, the cost associated with such production proved fatal for the project. It was financially unfeasible to bring it to life, and sadly, the idea for the show was abandoned before any filming could commence.
Rick McCallum, the producer, expressed some daring opinions on how Star Wars: Underworld might have impacted the entire Star Wars saga. He stated, “If produced, it would have fundamentally transformed the Star Wars universe in such a way that Disney likely wouldn’t have been interested in acquiring it afterward.
Such an assertion is quite bold. It implies that if this show had been produced, it could have steered the Star Wars saga down a risky path that potentially would have influenced even the decision by Disney to acquire Lucasfilm back in 2012.
Reflecting now, it’s intriguing to consider the different paths our history could have taken. The Young Indy Chronicles podcast delved into other projects such as Young Indy, providing insights into Indiana Jones’ early escapades, and the movie Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, starring Harrison Ford, which was released in 1989.
Those tales demonstrated George Lucas’s passion for venturing into uncharted territories within his universe, and Star Wars: Underworld would have represented another bold move along those lines.
I can’t help but ponder over the response from fans if Star Wars took a darker approach. It could have resonated with those yearning for something new, yet it might have been a daring decision for a franchise recognized for its broad popularity.
