Star Wars: Skeleton Crew Flops, Fans Abandon Ship

It’s worth noting that the initial five installments of “Skeleton Crew” on Disney+ haven’t appeared on the Nielsen rating lists – a unique occurrence for a “Star Wars” production.

And once again, Disney+ automatically enables Nielsen tracking in user accounts.

Given that it has just eight episodes altogether, it seems quite improbable that Skeleton Crew will make it onto the Nielsen ratings at this rate.

What are the ratings?

For the week from December 30, 2024, to January 5, 2025, Nielsen has published its ratings. This time frame encompasses the period when the fifth episode of Skeleton Crew was first aired on December 24.

At position 10 on the list, we find “Beast Games” with a total of 398 million minutes watched. As “Skeleton Crew” didn’t even make it onto the chart, its viewership must have been less than the required minimum.

It appears that, based on Nielsen’s measurements of viewership across a weekly timespan, the optimism among fans that they might binge-watch Skeleton Crew is starting to wane.

It seems more likely that viewers are choosing to wait until the entire series has been released before starting to binge-watch. Yet, there hasn’t been a significant increase in viewership after five episodes, which suggests that we may not be attracting any new audiences.

Comparison to The Acolyte

Compared to other shows, “The Acolyte” (a series that seems to have dealt a fatal blow to “Star Wars”) struggled in terms of popularity, with only its initial two-episode premiere, the third episode, and the final episode managing to appear on the Nielsen ratings.

In simpler terms, the last episode of “The Acolyte” was watched for a total of 335 million minutes, but if it had been released during the same week as “Skeleton Crew” Episode 5, it wouldn’t have made it onto the Nielsen rankings.

Additionally, a recent report confirmed that Star Wars underperformed on Disney+ last year.

Fans no longer care about Star Wars

Skeleton Crew isn’t a poorly made show at all; in fact, it surpasses many Star Wars series available on Disney+. Yet, the fans haven’t seemed to engage with it. Instead, they appear to have lost interest in Star Wars as a whole.

It’s clear that the responsibility lies with Kathleen Kennedy, Lucasfilm, and Disney, as they didn’t meet expectations by producing a high-quality product.
