‘Star Wars Minis’: First Teaser Gives Fans a Sweet Look at the Galaxy

Star Wars fans have a fun new short to look forward to this holiday season! According to StarWars.com, “The Gingerbread Death Star Trench Run” will debut on Star Wars Kids this Tuesday. It’s a playful take on the famous trench run scene from the original Star Wars movie, but everything – the Death Star, Darth Vader, and even the X-wings – is made out of gingerbread and other tasty treats.

Industrial Light & Magic created the short film, with Landis Fields as the lead creative. Fields told StarWars.com that the team wanted to bring joy and encourage creativity, a tradition he sees going back to Walt Disney and George Lucas. He explained that inspiring imagination has always been central to their work.

As a dedicated Star Wars fan himself, Fields wants this short film to spark a love for the series in a new generation and inspire kids to be creative. “He hopes viewers will not only enjoy the stories but also feel motivated to express themselves – whether through making costumes, drawing, or any other activity they love,” he explained.

As a huge Star Wars fan, I really loved this short – it felt like a fun, creative tribute to everything I grew up with. But more than that, it genuinely sparked my imagination and I think it’ll do the same for kids, encouraging them to create their own stories too.

To bring the gingerbread world to life, Fields and the team at ILM focused on realistic details. They carefully observed actual cookies, recreated hand-piped icing, and cleverly used gumdrops to represent the engines of the X-wings.

As anyone who’s attempted a gingerbread house can attest, they’re delightfully imperfect. The process of sticking pieces together with frosting is actually part of what makes them special,” Fields noted. To recreate the famous trench run scene, the team created candy explosions and used powdered sugar to simulate star effects, aiming for a lighthearted and whimsical atmosphere.

I’m really excited about this short – it’s part of a bigger project called Star Wars Minis! They’re making all sorts of cool, unique versions of characters and scenes from the Star Wars universe. I heard they’re even making a Mandalorian and Grogu out of yarn, which sounds amazing!

Fields explained that their goal was to make all the characters feel small and childlike, no matter the design. This applies to everything from gingerbread cookies and crocheted dolls to the Japanese Chibi style – they wanted them to seem like toys a child would play with.

A new Star Wars Kids animated short, “The Gingerbread Death Star Trench Run,” will be available tomorrow. Plus, more fun Star Wars Minis videos are planned for release throughout 2026.
