The first look at the upcoming animated series, Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, arriving on Disney+ April 6, 2026, delivers a powerful message: even the strongest things can be destroyed. The teaser trailer hints at a story where nothing is unbreakable and empires can fall.
The show begins with a two-part premiere and will air over five weeks, releasing two new episodes each week. The season will end with a finale on May 4th, also known as Star Wars Day.

Maul Returns for Revenge
As a huge fan of The Clone Wars, I’m really excited about Shadow Lord. It picks up right after the show and focuses on Maul – Sam Witwer is amazing as always – as he tries to rebuild his criminal empire on Janix, a planet the Empire hasn’t touched yet. The story introduces a new character, a Jedi Padawan named Devon Izara (voiced by Gideon Adlon), and she quickly becomes a key part of Maul’s plans for getting revenge. It looks like a really interesting dynamic!
Though no longer Darth, Maul is still driven by a relentless desire for power. The preview suggests a more thoughtful side to the character, with quiet, intense scenes – like a traditional tea ceremony – mixed with his usual violent acts and scheming within the criminal world.

New Faces, Familiar Threats
The voice cast includes:
- Sam Witwer as Maul
- Gideon Adlon as Devon Izara
- Wagner Moura as Captain Brander Lawson
- Richard Ayoade as Two-Boots
- Dennis Haysbert as Master Eeko-Dio-Daki
- Vanessa Marshall as Rook Kast
- Charlie Bushnell as Rylee Lawson
- Chris Diamantopoulos, David W. Collins, A.J. LoCascio, and Steve Blum round out the supporting cast.
The series features the return of Marrok, the enigmatic inquisitor from Ahsoka, and the intimidating Inquisitorius. This suggests a large-scale conflict involving Maul, the Empire, and Force-sensitive individuals who escaped the purge of Order 66.

The World of Janix
StarWars.com describes Janix as a city that feels like a blend of Gotham and Metropolis, but uniquely set in the Star Wars universe. This city, built inside a crater and operating outside of Imperial control, is a safe space for criminal organizations and smugglers – that is, until Maul shows up and causes trouble.
Brad Rau and Matt Michnovetz, the show’s executive producers, designed ‘The Mandalorian’ to be a thrilling, ongoing story, taking inspiration from the fast-paced adventure serials of older films. The series will delve into the changing beliefs of the character Maul, his ambitious schemes, and his complex connection with Devon, a young Jedi who finds her convictions challenged.
Painterly Animation Style
As a huge cinema fan, I was really struck by how beautiful Shadow Lord looked. The director of photography, Joel Aron, made a brilliant choice going back to older methods – things like actually painting on glass and using matte paintings. It gave the animation a really unique, textured feel, and honestly, created a Star Wars aesthetic that felt both familiar and totally fresh. It’s a gorgeous example of respecting the roots of the franchise while still pushing what’s possible with visual effects.
Animation director Keith Kellogg and his team at CGCG focused on making the characters’ faces and movements look more realistic and expressive.
Filoni’s Dark Star Wars Vision
Developed by Dave Filoni, a veteran of Star Wars, and Matt Michnovetz, with Brad Rau directing, Shadow Lord builds upon Filoni’s established vision for the period following the Clone Wars. Athena Portillo, Carrie Beck, and Josh Rimes served as executive producers.
Though Darth Maul has appeared in animated stories before, this new series will be his most revealing and challenging one yet. It explores his inner struggles, driven by past pain, a thirst for power, and his inability to escape a dark past.
The new Star Wars series, Maul – Shadow Lord, will debut on Disney+ on April 6, 2026, with the first two episodes available immediately. After that, two new episodes will be released each week, leading up to the final episode on May 4th.
