Star Wars Faces Total Collapse as ‘Skeleton Crew’ Fails to Make Nielsen Ratings!

After “The Acolyte,” it seems that Star Wars has ended its reign, as the entire season of “Skeleton Crew” on Disney+ did not manage to appear in the Nielsen television ratings.

The entire eight-episode series hasn’t appeared on the Nielsen charts, not even during its initial two-episode debut. Moreover, since all episodes are now accessible, it implies that there has been no surge of viewers who joined later to marathon-watch the show.

As a die-hard Star Wars enthusiast, I must admit that if the lukewarm reception towards Skeleton Crew isn’t a sign of waning fervor for the franchise, then I’m not sure what is. To my delight, Skeleton Crew isn’t as terrible as some might say. It’s engaging and offers a refreshing take on the Star Wars universe. In comparison, The Acolyte leaves much to be desired. However, it’s no secret that Disney and Lucasfilm have stumbled in their handling of this beloved saga.

It appears that Disney+ has activated Nielsen audience measurement within user accounts, a common practice across the industry for rating purposes. Interestingly, Samba TV, another company involved, hasn’t shared any data on viewership numbers yet, perhaps because those ratings are less than favorable. Given that Disney is an investor in Samba TV, this could be the reason behind the silence on their end.

What are the ratings?

In tenth place last week, Episode 8 of “Skeleton Crew” was released on Apple TV, which racked up a total of 396 million minutes watched, according to Nielsen charts – a figure that clearly outshines the final episode of “Skeleton Crew”, since it wasn’t even on the chart.

Nielsen tracks every episode of a show watched during a specific weekly period, implying that nobody consumed all the episodes of Skeleton Crew at once, as they were all not released then.

Compared to the final episode of The Mandalorian Season 2, a grand total of 1.336 billion minutes (or 1336 million minutes) were spent viewing it – and this figure is based on just half of the available time! This suggests that over 70% of Star Wars fans on Disney+ have either paused or stopped their watch time.

What’s next for Star Wars?

Disney+

On April 22, 2025, the second season of Andor will premiere on Disney+, marking the end of that series. Meanwhile, there are rumors suggesting that Ahsoka Season 2 may be cancelled. At this time, Disney hasn’t disclosed any new live-action Star Wars TV shows for Disney+. It appears that The Mandalorian might have concluded with Season 4 being replaced by a movie titled The Mandalorian & Grogu.

Movies

Upcoming on the big screen, we’ve only secured a date for “The Mandalorian and Grogu” on May 22, 2026. Although it’s rumored that Daisy Ridley will star in the upcoming “Star Wars: New Jedi Order” film, there’s no definite confirmation yet as it’s currently working with its fourth writer without a specified release date. The other Star Wars movies also lack release dates, such as the James Mangold-directed origins of The Force and the new Simon Kinberg trilogy.

Kathleen Kennedy’s graceful exit coming soon?

It’s worth noting that an executive from Lucasfilm, responsible for The Acolyte, has departed and been succeeded by Derek Hoffman, formerly of Kinberg’s team, who is now the new Vice President of Development at Lucasfilm. It seems possible that Kathleen Kennedy might gracefully step down in 2026 when Bob Iger leaves Disney, with Kinberg potentially taking over.
