Star Wars Animated Series Maul: Shadow Lord Announced at Tokyo Convention; Find Out Who’s Voicing the Famed Villain

In simpler terms, we’re seeing some classic Star Wars stories being retold. A brand new animated series has been announced and it’s set to debut on Disney+ soon. This particular series zeroes in on Darth Maul, with renowned actor Sam Witwer reprising his role as the famous antagonist.

At Star Wars Celebration in Tokyo on Friday, it was announced that the series “Maul: Shadow Lord” is in the works. It’s worth noting that actor Witwer was part of this big reveal too. For those not familiar, he has previously lent his voice to the character in both Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels.

His talents were later also showcased in the 2018 film Solo: A Star Wars Story.

During a panel dedicated to 20 years of Lucasfilm Animation, Lucasfilm CCO Dave Filoni and VP of Animation Athena Portillo unveiled a major surprise to dedicated fans, offering them an exclusive sneak peek.

Based on Variety’s report, spectators erupted with excitement upon viewing the initial clips of the Maul series. Notably, Portillo hinted that viewers can anticipate discovering much more intriguing details about the antagonist.

Regrettably, I can’t reveal many details, but let me assure you, Sam Witwer’s role in the series has been exceptional,” said Portillo during the discussion at the panel.

She further shared her enthusiasm towards the character and emphasized Dave Filoni and Sam’s significant role in its creation, stating that it was valuable to listen to Witwer’s insights regarding the character’s complexity. On stage, Portillo explained that since Filoni and Sam developed the character for animation, understanding Witwer’s thoughts on character development is crucial. She also mentioned that Witwer had a chance to review the script and contribute suggestions during the creative process.

As per the Animation Vice President, the upcoming series is set approximately one year following the occurrences depicted in The Clone Wars.
