Here’s the official synopsis for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, which premieres in 2026:
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy presents a fresh group of aspirants chasing a shared vision of aspiration and positivity. Guided by their stern yet nurturing mentors, they uncover the qualities essential to transform into Starfleet officers while experiencing burgeoning friendships, fierce rivalries, initial romances, and an ominous adversary that endangers not just the Academy but the Federation as a whole.
In the lineup for the TV show “Starfleet Academy” is Academy Award winner Holly Hunter, portraying Nahla Ake, the leader of Starfleet Academy and captain of the U.S.S. Athena. Additionally, she’s part Lanthanite, an alien species with a long lifespan, similar to Carol Kane’s character in “Strange New Worlds.” This could mean that her character might have been around during the times of Kirk, Picard, and other significant eras within the Federation. A fascinating detail from the trailer hints at a student contemplating a query related to Captain Benjamin Sisko at the end of “Deep Space Nine,” suggesting that the unresolved cliffhanger from 1999 may finally be addressed in this new series.

In our group of cadets, we have Bella Shepard (Genesis Lythe), who’s an admiral’s daughter aiming to forge her own path in Starfleet. Sandro Rosta portrays Caleb Mir, a former orphan with a challenging history. Karim Diané takes on the role of Jay-Den Kraag, a Klingon cadet striving to become a medical officer. Kerrice Brooks is Sam (Series Acclimation Mil), making history as the first of her kind at Starfleet Academy. Lastly, George Hawkins plays Darem Reymi, a promising captain from a prosperous planet. Zoë Steiner embodies Tarima Sadal, the daughter of the president of Betazed, similar to Deanna Troi’s homeworld in The Next Generation.

In this revival, we see the return of Robert Picardo as The Doctor from Star Trek: Voyager, along with Tig Notaro reprising her role as Jett Reno and Oded Fehr as Admiral Vance from Discovery. A new addition is Gina Yashere, who plays Commander Lura Thok, a Klingon/Jem’Hadar character serving as the chancellor’s First Officer and Cadet Master. Trek enthusiasts have not encountered a Jem’Hadar since Deep Space Nine ended, making her an especially exciting inclusion. Lastly, Paul Giamatti portrays Nus Braka, this season’s antagonist with a mysterious past linked to one of our cadets. Needless to say, the intriguing nature and diversity of these characters have us eagerly anticipating what lies ahead for a daring new chapter in Star Trek.
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy hits Paramount+ in early 2026.
