Star Trek, an iconic and beloved science-fiction franchise, revolutionized the way people viewed this genre in the past. Many who once dismissed sci-fi as mere pulp were swayed by the captivating charm of the acclaimed Star Trek series.
Over time, the Star Trek franchise has undergone changes, introducing diverse characters, crews, and narratives, yet the universal appeal it holds has remained constant. Despite some setbacks in previous decades, the franchise has since regained strength and is steadily advancing further.
Today, we have some exciting releases including comic book storylines by IDW Publishing. This piece is dedicated to discussing a freshly launched issue that finally delivers the much-anticipated collaboration between two significant timelines within the franchise. Fans are bound to relish this crossover event!
In the Star Trek universe, the timelines can get quite intricate and in this analysis, we won’t delve into each detail extensively as it would require considerable time. However, we will share essential insights to help you grasp why the latest Star Trek #25 is significant for our current discussion.
In the universe of Star Trek, the primary storyline we’re familiar with is known as the Prime Universe, where most of the series and movies are set. However, given that it’s a science fiction franchise, there are many other alternate and even parallel realities, one of which is the Kelvin Universe. This name refers to the continuity introduced in the mid-2000s, best recognized for the three films featuring Chris Pine as the main character.
The Kelvin timeline originated when a defiant Romulan vessel, Narada, journeyed to the early 23rd century and assaulted the USS Kelvin. This incident marked the split in time that birthed this new timeline and gave it its name. Although the Kelvin timeline has garnered significant attention, its impact on the franchise was rather limited; however, it appears that comics are planning to delve deeper into this storyline.
Just published is the 25th issue of “Star Trek,” penned by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly, with illustrations by Liana Kangas. Here’s a brief summary:
In an astonishing turn of events, the android Lore has carried out the inconceivable: He set off the Orb of Destruction, annihilating the entire universe. After a cosmic roll caused by the explosion’s shockwave, the spaceship Theseus enters the fluidic dimension. Inside this realm, the crew experiences a shifting existence, moving in and out of multiple realities. Benjamin Sisko finds himself confronted with a godkiller yet again, but this time it is solely his responsibility to preserve reality itself!
In other words, the battle you’re referring to caused Sisko’s original universe to be destroyed. The Theseus then found itself in a transitional space called fluidic space, but managed to escape. However, upon their return, it wasn’t the same universe as before; they had traveled back approximately 120 years into the past, as Data observed that the constellations were different from what they should be in their original timeline.
Here’s where the Enterprise steps in, according to Chris Pine’s Kirk, who informs Sisko that they were anticipated. This sets up an exciting anticipation for what’s coming next, as we eagerly await the unfolding of this potentially magnificent crossover spectacle.
