Star Trek Fans Outraged: TOS Reboot Teased by Controversial Producers!

If the creators of Strange New Worlds have their desired outcome, Star Trek may venture into a place that fans might not wish it to – undergoing a reboot and essentially taking over from the original series.

Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers, who were already subject to debate during the Kurtzman-led Paramount period, are now hinting at a possible revamp of the original “Star Trek” series. Although whispers point towards a complete overhaul after the Skydance merger is finalized, it seems that Goldsman and Myers are fully committed to a fresh interpretation that could potentially replace the legendary show produced by Gene Roddenberry and featuring William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy.

During the panel for the Season 3 premiere of Strange New Worlds at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York, the producers discussed why the series will conclude after a brief fifth season, which just happens to coincide with the end of Kurtzman’s contract and Skydance’s anticipated takeover.

Akiva Goldsman Says Strange New Worlds Was Always Meant to Lead Into TOS

As a die-hard Star Trek fan, I’ve got some exciting insights to share about “Strange New Worlds”. You might remember Akiva Goldsman, the guy behind projects like “Discovery”, “Short Treks”, and “Picard”. Well, he recently spilled the beans on how “Strange New Worlds” is subtly setting us up for an adventure that feels straight out of the Original Series (OS). So, buckle up, fellow Trekkies! This is going to be a journey worth taking.

We decided to model our series after ‘Star Trek: The Original Series.’ We pondered, ‘Could a five-year mission realistically happen?’ Since we’re nearly at the four-year mark, it’s close enough. To tell this story effectively, we needed to commit to that timeline. These questions needed addressing and we promised to address them. That’s our blueprint for the next phase of our show.

In the series “Strange New Worlds,” we have younger iterations of popular characters such as Kirk, Spock, Uhura, Scotty, Chapel, and M’Benga from the original series (TOS). Goldman subtly suggested that they could potentially delve deeper, implying a possibility of introducing even more characters from TOS.

Then, we seem to bump into the Terms of Service, but it’s peculiar because they don’t appear to be affected, and we possess certain arrangements… [Adopting a more secretive tone]

In simpler terms, the statement “we have those sets” suggests that the idea of continuing or rebooting the original Star Trek series is being considered. It’s likely because if they don’t need to construct new sets, they can produce a revamped version of TOS at a significantly lower cost.

Fans Reject TOS Reboot But Skydance Could Change Everything

Of course, the response from fans hasn’t been particularly favorable. Similar to many productions under the Kurtzman era of Star Trek, long-term viewers seem disinterested in watching their beloved characters and narratives being reinvented or damaged further.

Skydance’s takeover offers a promising prospect for a more authentic, considerate adaptation of Star Trek, aligning with fans’ expectations. Meanwhile, the halt in production of Transformers due to its poor performance could mean a similar fate for it. The current series, Strange New Worlds, and Starfleet Academy with two seasons remaining are likely to conclude, suggesting that the current team led by Kurtzman may be leaving soon.

Maybe then we can finally get something post-Picard — instead of yet another remake.
