After almost ten years and multiple attempts, it appears the story of Chris Pine’s Captain Kirk and the crew of the Enterprise has come to an end. Variety reports (via TrekCore) that while Paramount Pictures is planning more Star Trek movies, they won’t include any of the actors from the films directed by J.J. Abrams. This means a fourth film featuring that crew won’t be happening. Despite working on several scripts and considering directors like Quentin Tarantino and Matt Shakman, Paramount couldn’t find a concept they were happy with.
A new Star Trek film is desired, but the studio is no longer planning to feature the original cast from the J.J. Abrams movies, including Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto.
While it’s a letdown, the news isn’t entirely unexpected. The original actors’ contracts covered three movies, and their salaries have understandably increased, particularly for stars like Chris Pine and Oscar winner Zoe Saldana – bringing the budget up significantly. Had they returned, there would have been a substantial wait, even longer than the gap between the original series and the first Star Trek movie. Plus, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds already features well-liked younger versions of these characters. It doesn’t make sense to have competing portrayals, especially if a new Star Trek: Year One series moves forward.
While it appears the adventures of Kirk’s Enterprise in the Kelvin timeline have come to a close, we suspect this isn’t the end of that universe. A reboot of Star Trek: The Next Generation, set further in the future of the Kelvin timeline, feels like a logical next step for Paramount, perhaps with familiar faces like Zachary Quinto’s Spock making brief appearances. However, Paramount’s plans for Star Trek in theaters remain unknown. It’s becoming more and more probable that we won’t see the cast J.J. Abrams assembled in 2009 reunited on the Enterprise bridge again.
