Stan Lee, who passed away in 2018 at age 95, jointly produced some of the most lasting symbols of the 20th century, such as Spider-Man, the X-Men, and the Avengers. It’s rare to find someone who hasn’t come across these characters. Upon Lee’s death, there was widespread recognition of his impact. However, many were unaware of the turmoil that marked his final years. Recently, The Hollywood Reporter announced a new documentary titled Stan Lee: The Final Chapter, produced by filmmaker Jon Bolerjack who spent the last four years with Lee, capturing events as they unfolded. What Bolerjack witnessed was that those around the legendary creator often exploited him.

Accompanying Stan Lee at numerous conventions, Bolerjack witnessed him tirelessly meeting Marvel fans for autographs and photos, even though his age was quite advanced. This was done in an attempt to exploit the popularity of Stan Lee financially, according to some reports. However, prior to Lee’s passing, accusations surfaced about elder abuse within his inner circle. Bolerjack asserts that he has numerous hours of footage documenting such misconduct in a film he produced on Stan Lee. Additionally, Bolerjack claims to have hours of interviews with notable comic book creators like Mark Waid (of Daredevil fame) and others, sharing their personal accounts of what they observed during this time.
Despite rumors suggesting significant abuse during this period, Bolerjack claims in the original report that things were far worse than initially thought. Additionally, he asserts that Stan Lee was financially struggling at the time of his death in November 2018. It’s shocking to consider that the man responsible for creating many of Marvel’s most famous characters was impoverished. This is surprising given that by the time of his passing, Marvel films had amassed a staggering $30 billion in total earnings, not including decades worth of merchandise sales. The upcoming documentary Stan Lee: The Final Chapter promises to shed light on the truth about Stan Lee’s life.
