
Sally Kirkland, a veteran actress known for her work in theater, movies, and television, has died at 84. Her publicist, Michael Greene, confirmed she passed away Tuesday morning at a hospice in Palm Springs.
Kirkland’s friends have started a fundraising campaign to help with her medical bills. She suffered a serious accident, breaking four bones in her neck, her right wrist, and her left hip. During her recovery, she unfortunately developed several infections, requiring additional hospital visits and rehabilitation.
Before becoming an actress, Kirkland started her career as a model. She went on to have a successful and diverse career, starring in numerous well-known films and television programs.
She became famous for her role in the 1987 film Anna, where she portrayed a Czech actress starting over in America and mentoring a rising star. She also received a Golden Globe and an Oscar nomination for her work in Moonstruck, competing against Cher (Moonstruck), Glenn Close (Fatal Attraction), Holly Hunter (Broadcast News), and Meryl Streep (Ironweed).
Throughout her career, Kirkland acted in numerous popular films. Some of her notable roles included appearances alongside Paul Newman and Robert Redford in The Sting, with Barbra Streisand in The Way We Were, and with Kevin Costner in Revenge. She also starred in films like Cold Feet with Keith Carradine and Tom Waits, Ron Howard’s EDtv, and Oliver Stone’s JFK. Other credits include Heatwave with Cicely Tyson, High Stakes with Kathy Bates, and Bruce Almighty alongside Jim Carrey. Movie fans may also recall her small role in Mel Brooks’ classic comedy, Blazing Saddles.
Kirkland worked in Hollywood for over fifty years and became a well-known actress. While she frequently appeared in smaller roles, she’s especially remembered for her performance in the film Anna.
