As a movie reviewer, I’m thrilled to announce that my favorite Bikini Bottom gangsters are stepping out of their underwater world and onto the battlegrounds of the new Magic: The Gathering’s Secret Lair collections! Characters from the beloved SpongeBob SquarePants series will be gracing our cards, each with a distinct artistic flair. These characters will be featured in three separate packs.
Secret Lair, a sub-brand under the Magic: The Gathering umbrella, is known for its special drops that result from collaborations with various artists or intellectual properties. Recently, they’ve unveiled collections with Spider-Man, Final Fantasy, and Avatar: The Last Airbender. Now, it’s time to welcome SpongeBob SquarePants into the ever-expanding Magic: The Gathering universe!
Among the three available packages, one stands out as Magic: The Gathering’s Secret Lair x SpongeBob SquarePants: Legends of Bikini Bottom pack. This special edition includes cards featuring all major characters, each with abilities and artwork that align with their on-screen personas. For instance, Plankton is unable to block attacks due to his diminutive size, while Sandy the martial astronaut’s moves can’t be countered because of her exceptional skill level. Artists Caleb Meurer and Gregg Schigiel are responsible for creating the cards in the Legends of Bikini Bottom pack.
In the fusion of Secret Lair and SpongeBob SquarePants: Internet Phenomenon, they’ve incorporated numerous well-liked Spongebob internet memes. Believe me, I’m in the know. One of the counterspell cards employs a teasing Spongebob meme, where he does an unintentional chicken impression while gazing at plaid. If you’re familiar with the series, you might recall this picture. Another card is the Squidward eyes meme, which says, “You draw two cards and lose 2 life.” This is exactly how I feel when I remember I have homework right before bedtime.
Secret Lair x SpongeBob SquarePants: Beneath the Seas showcases a series of cards that spotlight various spots in Bikini Bottom and the well-loved Krusty Krab specialty, The Krabby Patty, with art created by Jon Vermilyea. Take a look at all the cards in the gallery provided below.

Starting from March 24, 9 AM Pacific Time, you’ll be able to purchase the special “Magic: The Gathering” packs themed around Spongebob Squarepants on the Secret Lair website. The standard editions will cost $29.99 each. If you prefer something more luxurious, there will also be foil versions of these packs available for $39.99.
