Spike Lee Cheers For His ‘Brother’ Denzel Washington Following His Golden Globes Nomination For Gladiator II

As a lifestyle expert with an appreciation for both cinema and longstanding friendships, I find it truly heartwarming to witness the camaraderie between Denzel Washington and Spike Lee. Their bond, forged over more than a decade and multiple film collaborations, is a testament to mutual respect, admiration, and shared creative passion.

I’m thrilled to share that my good friend, Denzel Washington, has been nominated at the 2025 Golden Globes for his exceptional portrayal of Macrinus in Gladiator II. The recognition he received at this prestigious award ceremony was certainly worth celebrating! In fact, during his talk at the Red Sea Film Festival, my fellow filmmaker Spike Lee took a moment to acknowledge and applaud Denzel’s achievement. What an inspiring moment for us all!

For over a dozen years now, I’ve been fortunate enough to call this remarkable man not just a colleague, but a brother in spirit. We’ve shared the screen, sweat, and laughter on numerous projects, and it’s always been an Equalizer alum by my side.

Recently, Lee has been busy working on the post-production of “Highest 2 Lowest”. This project marks their fifth collaboration with Washington, having previously worked together in films like “Malcolm X”, “Mo’ Better Blues”, “Inside Man”, and “He Got Game”.

During a chat at the gathering, the Old Boy star remarked, “A while back, someone reminded me that our last collaboration was 18 years ago. I couldn’t believe it, as it didn’t seem like so long. It’s a privilege to have made five films with him; he’s undeniably one of the finest actors on earth.

Additionally, he mentioned, “We’re like family. We simply follow our ways. We’ve grown accustomed to each other…our bond is extremely strong.

Moreover, Lee emphasized that Washington gave an exceptional performance in Malcolm X, stating it as the most outstanding portrayal of a real-life figure in a biographical film up until now.

Lee mentioned that Akira Kurosawa’s Rashomon played a significant role in shaping his 1986 film She’s Gotta Have It. He explained that he was first introduced to Kurosawa’s work during his film studies at NYU, where he discovered the realm of international cinema. The storytelling technique used in Rashomon formed the basis for She’s Gotta Have It.

In Rashomon, the narrative is presented from multiple viewpoints, each recounting what they perceived as the same incident – in this case, an alleged rape. On the other hand, She’s Gotta Have It centers around Nola Darling, a woman managing three romantic relationships, with each man providing a unique interpretation of her. The influence of Kurosawa is clearly apparent from the inception of this production.

In 2022, Lee was present at the ceremony. This year, he came back following a hiatus of two years.
