In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), the debut of Peter Parker, played by Tom Holland, was a memorable moment in Captain America: Civil War. The scene unfolds in Queens, New York, where we see Peter returning home to find Marisa Tomei as Aunt May and Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark on the couch. As we’re all aware, Stark then enlists Peter and takes on a mentor role, providing him with a state-of-the-art Spider-Man suit he developed. And so, as they say, that’s how things started. However, in Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, the events that followed take a unique turn.
In the debut episode of the latest season, we find Peter Parker returning home from school, much like in “Civil War.” He’s even got the same tune playing on his earphones. However, unlike Iron Man lounging on the couch with his “unusually attractive aunt,” as Tony referred to May, it’s Oscorp CEO Norman Osborn sitting with her this time. Spider-Man fans will recall that Osborn is often portrayed as Spidey’s main adversary, the Green Goblin. The green suit Osborn is wearing serves as a not-so-subtle foreshadowing of this future role.
In the captivating world of Marvel, I, as a devoted fan, find myself drawn into the intriguing tale where Norman Osborn extends an invitation to me, Peter Parker, to intern at his extraordinary science division specifically designed for gifted young minds – the same division that Tony Stark cleverly pitched to May to pave the way for my journey. This fascinating opportunity is reminiscent of the plot in “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man,” but it’s not just a storyline; it’s a tangible reality within the Marvel universe.
Notable figures like Amadeus Cho, who ultimately transforms into the (Totally Awesome) Hulk, are part of this program, adding to its allure. The enigmatic Dr. Bentley Wittman oversees this lab, a character who in the comics is none other than the Fantastic Four’s formidable adversary, the Wizard.
As the story unfolds in episode two, it becomes evident that Norman Osborn is well-aware of my secret identity as Spider-Man. It seems he will play a significant role in my life, much like Tony Stark did for the 616 Peter Parker.
What does this development imply for the future of Spider-Man, our friendly neighborhood hero? Comic book enthusiasts are well aware of where this storyline is heading. Eventually, Norman Osborn will undergo enhancements, which could give him super strength. Simultaneously, he’s likely to lose his sanity during this process. Once transformed into the Green Goblin, he will pose a significant challenge for Peter, as in this adaptation, Norman seems destined to exhibit a paternal bond with him. Unlike previous portrayals, where Norman was slightly kinder to Peter than to his own son, Harry, this time around, it appears their relationship may evolve into something deeper and more complex, possibly showcasing genuine fatherly love.
In light of this, one can’t help but wonder if a character like Norman Osborn, from the Spider-Man universe, exists within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The world where our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man resides bears striking resemblance to the MCU. References to significant MCU events such as the Chitauri invasion in Avengers indicate a near identical history. However, in Spider-Man: No Way Home, it was stated by the Raimi-verse Norman Osborn that Oscorp doesn’t exist in the MCU and he couldn’t find his son Harry. Nevertheless, just because Oscorp is absent, does not necessarily mean that the character himself doesn’t. It will be intriguing to see if a version of Norman Osborn from the MCU makes an appearance at some point. Given that Colman Domingo, who voiced him, could portray him convincingly in live-action, this idea seems quite appealing and worth exploring.
